Need to assign a permanent letter to my external USB HD

The letter assigned to my external HD changes occasionally, interfering with my weekly Acronis backup. If I open Disk management and change the letter on that disk, will it be permanent?

As long as I mentioned it, though it's off topic, is there any need to upgrade from Acronis True Image Home 2009, build 9709? It consistently runs backups and validates without errors. I've never had to restore, so the backups are untested. I can boot Acronis and locate them with no trouble.

    Thanks,
    Rusty

No need to upgrade your 2009 version if it does all you need it to do - however, be sure to log in at the Acronis website and view your registered products to see if a newer build of 2009 is available.

Yes, once you assign (rather: change) the drive letter on your USB drive, it'll be permanent unless the same letter is already in use next time you plug in the drive.
For that reason I'd recommend going with something near the end of the alphabet, like U: for USB or similar.

    +1 from me too.

My USB backup drive has been assigned the letter Z and it never changes when the drive is reconnected.

What if you have for example 5 Ext. HD's and each one is letter U, if only one is inserted will it always be U, and what if all of them are inserted?

Then they will take whatever letter is free Joe.

Best thing to do is plug in all 5, then assign as follows:

    P,Q,R,S and T

    or

    V,W X,Y and Z

    etc. etc.

What if all 26 Drive Letters are reserved (using a USB adapter/extension)?

    Very welcome, happy computing. :)

You know, guys - I'm curious too, what does happen if all 26 letters are in use? Will Windows implode, or simply not bother assigning another letter at all? I wonder.

Or will we start having alpha (α) and omega (Ω) letters LOL!
