You need to rebuild your icon cache.

    this is how:

    1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
    2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
    3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
    5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
    6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
    7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    DEL IconCache.db /a
    EXIT
    8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
    9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

Is it possible to add this to the autoexec.bat file changing the %userprofile% to the actual path and restoring the icons at boot?

How would you prevent the explorer from starting at boot?
What you would need is a start-up script,

I didn't realize your icon cache gets corrupted so often.
but wouldn't it be better to try and repair or reinstall Windows?

    Greetings

Agreed a repair and/or reinstall would be the BEST solution, but for those impossible users that just can't wait (I know I am the only one that has these right?) I am looking for that quick fix that'll get thru to the weekend.

A repair could well be that fix.

And it will leave your install intact, so you could always try that.

    Good luck

I have writed a program to solve this bug, though it`s not official. It should solve the problem eternally. And by the way, you can uninstall this patch easily.
Download the lastest version here(Chinese page): http://my5123.blogbus.com/logs/48332610.html or the direct link(may not be lastest): http://my5123.esmartdesign.com//iconpatch/IconPatch%200.1.rar
