Thumbnails of the contents of some (but not all ) Images are NOT Icons.
And Thumbnails of Images do not belong on the Desk Top ... IMHO
The way I'm used to working .. I can't see what I have on my Desktop.
I'm also not allowed to Customize my Image file Icons
I have found out how to crack the registry to customize the R Click Context menu ..
So I don't always have to take the "Open With" > "Multiple Choice Test" Route ...
One click and I'm there.
In W7 .. You can NOT create a new task bar and park it on any edge of your screen(s)
You can only park a new Task Bar in the Windows Task bar .. What good does it do there ??
This WAS a nice feature if you're running twin screens.

I thought I'd contribute the W7 annoyances I've found so far...
And the reasons why I'm staying with XP
An OS is just a collection of tools (More or Less) .. Don't take it Personal ...

Actually, you only have to go through the "Open With Multiple Choice" once, and the Right-Click context menu will automatically be customized for you to include whichever program you selected, as show in this screenshot:
So, whichever way you do, you still need to Right-Click and click "Open With" to access the open with list...

This saves the "Hunt and Choose" procedure required with the "Open With" Route.
If you perform a lot of this ... It is a very handy Shortcut.
My file type Context menus are customized differently depending on the File Type.
It's just a shame that those who are not comfortable with editing the registry will loose this tool.
There are free tools available that allow you to customize the right click context menu without having to edit the registry yourself. The tool does it for you. One example of such tools is the Ultimate Windows Tweaker for 7
The screen shot shows a few of the items the tool will allow to be added to the context menu simply by checking a box (or unchecking to remove them).
Also there are .reg files people have created that allow the user to add various items to the right click context menu, again without the user having to personally go into regedit and edit the registry, although in effect such files and the tool I mentioned are editing the registry for the user.
Various apps (such as winzip or winrar to name just a few) also have options that allow the user to add or not add various items to the explorer context menu.
In sum, for my purposes, the right click menu is certainly customizable enough and I seem to be able to put whatever icons I want on my desktop. So I'm just totally happy with 7 and have a hard time understanding these kinds of criticisms, which seem pretty minor to me. Certainly not enough to keep me from wanting to use an OS that is so much more advanced in so many respects then what came before.
In some cases one must be willing to find a way to adapt to new ways of doing things though, or not, I guess. :)
If I have any serious work to do .. I’m staying with XP as long as I can. The inability to have Icons on my desktop, Customize my R Click context menus or make new taskbars … Makes W7 a major pain to work in .. When working with Images.
If you haven’t been spoiled with these missing XP tools .. Then go for W7
You can have as many icons as you wish with Win7, your screen resolution is the limiting factor. Customizing rightclick context menu is fairly simple in Win7 just download the correct 3rd party tools like Windows 7 Manager and your set, If your serious about your work you should have dumped XP a long time ago.
last time I used it, windows xp x64 had serious compatibility issues (with both hardware and software), and that was somewhere end of 2007/beginning of 2008, the sp2 was out and there has been no new one since then as far as I know.
I'd recommend Vista sp2 x64 over windowx xp x64, for sure. I know a lot of people hated vista from the start, but it has really turned into a very stable and flexible os, and shares same kernel as windows 2008.
Or may be you didn't mention vista because windows 7 is seen as a vista upgrade, so you want to choose between 2 really different things, hence xp and windows 7.

i got lost between the 2 of them i don't want to waste my time trying the best OS for me so can someone help me pick one

Try Ubuntu, not as good as windows 7 when it comes to gaming but no viruses and IS very fast.
