Slow search Engine

I just upgraded a Dell XPS 410 with a new HD, graphics card, and Windows 7 Home Premium. I also boosted the RAM from 1gb to 4gb. I changed the default Bing search engine to Google. In my homepage in IE, I can access favorites with no problem. If I try to use the google search engine to get to a web site, it just keeps searching for several minutes with no result. Did MS deliberately honk up the google search engine to force you to use bing in Windows 7? Oh, I'm using a DSL line for internet access and never had this problem with XP or VISTA. Since I just installed the OS 2 days ago, there have been 50 upgrades downloaded. Could this be the problem?

I ensured all the drivers were updated and even got my old printer to work. When I first booted after installation and hooking up the router, I had no problem as long as Bing was the default search engine. When I went to Google the problem started. Then the 50 updates. Everything else seems to be operating normally. I'm going to restore Windows to before the updates to see if that solves the problem.

Update. Spent 2 hrs on phone with Microsoft tech geek. They tried everything short of replacing the CPU.

No add-ons. Doesn't search in Bing or Google. Still no respnse from Microsoft due to holiday. Only way to get to a website is to type the URL (If you know it!) Can't even get to a site if a URL is referred to in an email.

Fixed. Required a re-install of Windows 7 software. Something happened to host file(s) during initial install. Seems to be working OK now.
