Registry clean or defrag?

Should I use any prorams to clean or defrag my registry.

If yes which once are recommended both free and paid.

Cleaning the registry is thought by many to be of little benefit. Deleting the wrong entries can cause problems.

However, I do it. If you want to do it, I advise being careful of the big commercial programs, unless you are able to check each entry before deleting.

Ccleaner is a good app. - I do not advise it's registry clean option on 7.

I have been using the registry cleaner in Glary on 7 x64 without any problems - it is quite gentle and I have never had any problems with it.

Glaryutilities also automatically makes a backup. It includes a lot of great modules, such as a file undelete tool , disk space explorer, and a registry Defrag module.

I use the Glary registry Defrag. module on Vista, but not on 7.

This is because the Vista partition is the System partition as well as the Vista Boot partition.

However, the 7 Boot partition is obviously different from the System partition. I do not recommend doing a registry defrag across drives/partitions.

You may like to check in Disk Management to see which is the System partition. Confusingly, this contains the Boot files, bootmgr. and BCD - this is the partition thru. which all your installed Windows operating systems will be booted.

The Boot partition is the partition containing the operating system files.

There does not seem to be a need to defrag or even clean the registry in 7. What was once an important maintenance task in 2000 and XP is now not necessary, as the system does take care of itself, it's simply designed better. At the same time the cleaners and defraggers will suggest deleting lots of stuff from the registry. Unless you are actually able to tell what those registry keys are and why would you want to delete them, I recommend staying away from any such cleaning action. The benefit of the cleaning is doubtful, while the potential for error is rather large.

I've had issues that CCleaner has solved for me in Windows 7, such as a failed Adobe Flash uninstall, and a failed reinstall of ATI drivers. I've been using CCleaner for years without issue.

You'll find people who will tell you not to bother cleaning your registry, that it does nothing, but those people are either closed-minded (not in the insulting sense...in the way of not knowing the issues others have faced), or are lucky enough to have never needed to clean up their registry. Doing it manually is time consuming, so I use CCLeaner to do so.

Another vote for CCleaner and it's Registry scan: I have put it on hundreds of installs over ten years without issue. If you have worries about Reg cleaning, then accept the backup file which can easily merge keys back in if needed. Set a restore point if you want to be really careful.

CCleaner is one of the most highly regarded genius apps in all of tech, used by most professionals and tech enthusiasts. I use it monthly followed by Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers.

I preform the similar maintenance as well and have never run into an issue. I install many programs for testing purposes and, therefore, run CCleaner and Auslogics Reg defrag a bit more often than you do.

I wouldn't recommend one unfamiliar with the registry run about willy-nilly preforming these tasks but, for many of us, they are great tools.

Do you guys pay for Auslogics Reg Defrag or did you find a free version of it?
