Registry clean or defrag?

Use the free Auslogics Disk and Reg defraggers found by Googling.

They have an optimization program which you pay for that includes the defraggers but it is not necessary to tweak Win7 even with tools from an esteemed tech company.

CCleaner isn't a registry defragger, though. It's just a cleaner.

I have tried downloading auslogics registry defrag and I only had a 30 day trial. It was just the defrag too! Not optimizer.

I haven't ever seen a post online which gave any credibility to reg defraggers, but if someone has one, post a link.

Okay, so a defragger basically removes gaps between files, which ultimately speeds up file locating and speeds up your computer (this is what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong). If this is beneficial for the disk drive, why wouldn't it be beneficial for the registry?

The problem is, the registry itself wouldn't need to be defragmented, just the filedata that it is stored in...which a normal defragger would handle, such as the built-in one. I have seen countless links suggesting the registry itself can't or doesn't get fragmented.

If it doesn't do anything, then what does a registry defragger do? I can understand paid programs who make money from false perceptions from consumers, but what about the free programs such as free registry defrag and auslogics registry defrag? What do they gain from these programs? As far as I know, these two do not advertise for anything but their products (which are usually free as well).

That's the point of my question above, and why I asked for links. For years I've seen these programs listed, but not once I have seen a review or a test to show any purpose or reasoning behind them.
