Also, see my above post on proper maintenance.

Just had a quick look through, i only use the ccleaner once maybe twice a month anyway, i would expect people to use it daily as they most probably will run into trouble :)

    good post by the way.

As far as the registry is concerned, yes.
I too agree with Carl & Rich.

CCleaner is quite a handy tool for cleaning up all the temporary junk files, and is really all you need.

If you want to clean up the registry on occaasion, running Ccleaners Reg. Cleaner and delete only the keys you know for a 100% fact are dead keys.

If you uninstall Itunes for example, you are probably safe deleteing keys specifically related to the no longer installed itunes.
If you arent sure what the key is for, its best left alone.

Although it doesn't hurt to do this on occasion, you really aren't gaining any performance either. So in a sense a bit pointless.

I am not going to single out any particular piece of software, but anything that is not needed is garbage.
I use CCleaner but not the Reg portion. They are all unchecked.

I think you are more experienced than me when it comes to this, so i am going to test this theory and leave the old trusted cleaners to one side :)

    thanks for your info.
You are welcome, Bugsy. Some of what I posted is from experience. I played a round a bit experimenting. Fortunatley, I imaged my system beforehand.

so the best thing to do is just to leave well alone and let win 7 do its thing?
Yes, except you can delte keys left over from software you have uninstalled. Ccleaner is good at finding these as is Revo Uninstaller.

As far as Win 7 is concerned, it is totally and completely unnecessary and poses a great risk.

I had a bad experience while trialing a registry cleaner in Win XP some years back. Uniblue something, or whatever it was called. It broke a bunch of Windows default functions forcing me to system restore the computer. Now I just delete things manually from the registry if needed.

Like recently, I found a Sun Java remnant in IE (Sun Java deployment toolkit 6.something...), it should have removed with the rest of Java, but it hadn't for some reason. I removed its .DLL and four registry entries. Pin point strike~

    I have a world-broken-record for posting this:

Have put CCleaner on hundreds of installs over ten years time representing thousands of uses without a single complaint for either its disk or registry cleaning function.

It is unfair to lump what is perhaps the single-most-respected little genius app in all of tech with the reg cleaner sales scams you see in ads.

Greg, I use Ccleaner, too. I don't use the registry cleaning function much; but I do use it. What I never recommend is for anyone who is not a registry expert to blindly follow a registry cleaner.
