7 for Dell 2350

I bought Dell Dimension 2350 Pc about 6 years ago and I've used windows xp pro now and I want to install windows 7 to my pc; but I have some questions in my mind below my questions and my system feature below it. There are also my computer's features link because I've not change any part of my pcs.

Windows 7 is better than windows xp? I think: of course
windows 7 works on My system with better performance than xp???????
Can I setup and use windows 7 on my system; but I will setup xp + 7. I think to use 10 harddisk for xp and 30 gb for 7

Documentation

My System= Dell Dimension 2350
-Intel® Pentium® 4 - 2.00 GHz
-384 MB DDR SDRAM (128+256) PC2100 (266-MHz) = I can upgrade this if necessary
-64 MB integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics
-40GB Ram = I'm think to use 10gb for xp and 10gb for 7 but if necessary I can use all( I will install xp for my family because I want to seperate os after family sent emails from my account that is hosted on outlook)

I'm waiting for each commment. Thank You!

Not sure on some of your questions, but I can say that you will not be able to use screensavers or aero effects because of the video. I would try to push your Ram up in your system quite a bit more. I am running it on my old Dell Optiplex GX260 with these specs:

P4 2.6 Ghz
1GB Ram
40 GB HD
Geforce 6200 256 MB (Just upgraded from a 64 MB so I could use the aero effects)

I am using two hard drives, one with XP and one with 7. I just open the case and swap them them out if I need to go into XP. I did the same thing on my wifes.

I'm sure someone else can give you a better idea, I have seen it run on Computers like yours, but have no idea of the actual funtionality of it.

Hi,

I would strongly advise you not to install Windows 7.

Your machine is just not up to par, and I am sure you will regret it.

Memory type 184 pin DDR 2700. Expensive, older and slower memory.

Small IDE hard drive.

Video - no Aero for you.... 'nuff said...

Sloooowwww FSB.

Save your money and put it toward a new computer with Windows 7 pre-installed.

There is a forum where people share good buys they come across. It is a good place to find slick deals.

Another place to watch is the big brand outlet sites - Dell, HP, etc all have a variation. I have had good luck with outlet deals numerous times. Systems come with full factory warranty.

A low end $300-500 desktop will be better than what you could upgrade your Dim 2350 to. Might even be able to beat that price.

I agree with Squonksc. You would be better off getting a new system with Win 7 than trying to upgrade your present system.

Are we making a valid case for XP remaining a viable option in some circumstances?

Yes, I guess we are.

Yes and no. More a case of a Win7 upgrade NOT being a viable option for some systems on a cost/benefit basis.

If a person were to chose purchasing a Win7 license, for arguments sake, at $120 for a Home Premiuim upgrade and still require significant costs to upgrade an older system it might be time to retire the old horse.

Again for arguments sake:

184 Pin DDR Memory - $60-70
300 GB IDE HDD - $50
Video -a PCI based video card - why bother - but say $50

$280 - 290 total.....

My numbers are fast and loose but the cost/benefit is a loser, IMO, because it will still be an older slower system.

Add another $200 and wait for a nice desktop with Win7 pre-installed. Depending on the specs, memory could be added/upgraded later as well as a video card - if needed and as funds become available.

And as I mentioned I have seen some $300 desktop deals (no monitor) that would be better than ANY upgrade to a Dim 2350.

On the other hand, if the Win7 copy is free... well one could always experiment for the hell of it.

But to put any amount of $$$ into the Dim 2350 hardware upgrade would not be my idea of a good investment. JMO.

Some (I will restrain from mentioning any name) would say "That is a fine candidate for Linux, just run Linux and you will never need that fancy stuff! If everyone would just run Linux we would have world peace!"
