Windows 7 will not shut down when button is pressed

My daughters new laptop with Windows 7 will not shut down the normal way when the shutdown button is pressed.

She must hold down the power button to turn the computer off.

What can she do to fix this problem...thanks for you help..it is appreciated.

    Hi Wayne,

Lets see if its an issue with any of the system files. Please try this:

    1. Click
    2. In the Search box, type cmd
    3. Right-click on cmd and then click Run as administrator
    4. When the command windows opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report back the results of this process when its completed.

    Regards,

    Welcome to Seven Forums...

Right click on Desktop and select "Personalize". Click on Screensaver on right bottom screen.

In power management, click on "Change power settings".

Click on "Choose what the power buttons do". Here you can define the power buttons...

She has it working now. She did the cmd to check systems files and found nothing wrong. Then she went checked her 'power button' and fixed the problem. She has not set her laptop to go into hibernation when the laptop is closed. Also, I told her about holding down the power key to 'force' a shutdown.

Thanks guys for your help. It is much appreciated. I'm sure in the future I'll be back as I use my laptop 24/7 and since I'm out of the country, it's good to have a standby in case of a computer problem.
