Well gentlemen, I cannot bring the AVG package onto a CD because the laptop I am working off of is a has deployed to the Middle East, and as such its CR-ROM drive was destroyed from repeated playing of DVDs of dubious origin. I also do not have a DVD with the Windows 7 operating system. At this point I would not mind exorcising the infected laptop with a hard restart, but I lack the OS to resurrect it.

    Thoughts?

If there's nothing on the laptop you want to save, follow Gateway's instructions to reinstall Windows using the recovery partition on the laptop: Gateway Support - Full Factory Recovery

    Lemur, Solidwave:
Thank you both for your help. I will consider what I want to do at this point. You two have helped me narrow down the potential issue and provided me with a trump to this bug, should I need to do something drastic.

I appreciate the crash course education.

I had another idea for something else you could check. If you launch regedit using the task manager technique I described earlier and navigate to HKCU\Software\Classes, do you see a subkey named ".exe" ? If you do, delete the .exe subkey.
