I've just had a balloon pop up saying that the C:\Windows\winsxs\filemaps folder is corrupt, so I took control of the folder so that I could try and find what file in it was corrupted, so when I actually right click on the folder and click on open, it says that the folder is corrupted and unreadable, so if anyone know how to repair or even restore the filemaps folder it would be most appreciated.
First, run chkdsk to correct any File system problems, then run System File Checker (sfc).
- Open My Computer.
- Right click on drive: and select Properties (drive: is your boot drive, usually C:)
- Click on the Tools tab then the Check now button.
- Check the Automatically fix File System errors box.
Alternatively, you can click on Start then Run, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter.
For your boot drive (usually C:), you will get a window that says the check could not be performed ....
Do you want to schedule this disk check to run the next time you restart the computer?
Click on Yes.
Shutdown and reboot. Chkdsk will start. It can take an hour or more to run depending on the size of your hard drive. Be patient and let it complete undisturbed.
If that doesn't fix the problem, run sfc:
- Click on Start, type command prompt.
- Right click on Command Prompt at the top of the window and select Run as Administrator.
- In the Command Prompt Window, type (or copy and paste) sfc /scannow and press Enter.
Vista and Windows 7 tell you if there were and problems, XP did not. You can examine the SFC results as follows:
Open a Command Prompt (does not have to be as Administrator):
- Type (or copy and paste) findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.
- Type (or copy and paste) notepad sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.
I ran the chkdsk, and it found a heap of orphaned files $$_microsoft.net_framework64 * * * or something similar, and when Windows restarted I then ran the SFC /scannow it said it had repaired some files but not others, rebooted and I can now access the filemaps folder no worries. I then entered this findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt, and then had a look at the sfcdetail.txt file but it was 0kb and had nothing in it. But all in all it seems to have fixed the problem with the filmaps folder. Thank you for the help Ztrucker most insightful and helpful.
You could try notepad %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log from a Run box then examine it manually but there is a lot of data. Go to the bottom and work backwards.
tried the notepad line and it said access denied and won't let me look not that it matters much though. Fixed that, just took ownership of the file and I can now see what's in it and boy is there a lot. What should I be looking for in this file though, will it tell me what the errors where that were corrupting the filmaps folder?
It should tell you what files it found problems with and that it fixed them.
I think if you search on [SR] and/or the word "repairing" you will find the relevant entries.
