Will my upgrade key work?

I currently am dual booting Vista and Win7 Home Premium. My question is when I receive my activation key from Microsoft for Home Premium upgrade will I be able to just use that key and activate my current installation.

Also anybody with tips on how I can delete Vista from my computer without messing up my boot up. Win7 is on my c: drive and Vista on a separate hard drive.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

1st Question: There isn't a solid answer for that question yet but i theory you should be able to...if not than do a repair install on 7 and insert your key there...that might still work
@nd Question: You can format the Vista partition but you will have to probably do a startup repair with your 7 disc...if Vista was installed first and then 7

or download neowin's BCDEdit, remove Vista's boot entry. then right click Computer..Manage..Disk Management..Right Click on the space occupied by Vista..Delete Volume..Then either Expand 7's partition into the free space or format it.

I agree that the Boot-up logic should be accomplished first, removing Vista.

I'd use bcdedit, then Disk Management...

Thanks for all the great info. I do have BCDedit and I removed Vista and then deleted the partition but I still had to do a repair from Win7 disk. All is well now, Thank you.

Good to hear...

Can you answer just a few questions?

1. 'Partitions' implies 1 physical HDD, right?

2. You attempted W7 boot after fix, and she wouldn't boot?
Is this why the "...had to do a repair from DVD" ?

3. You used your installed W7 'BCDEdit', not the Neowin 'EasyBCD' DL ?

Thanks!
Your situation seemed similar to:
Perpetual Reboot for Failed Win 7 Upgrades from vista
in an "inverse" sort of way, but still:
(MBR/Bootsector/BCD-store functions.)

a single fixed-disk, split up into 2 or more 'partitions' yes

probly start-up repair (cka boot-up repair), not to be confused with repair-install

i would hope he used easyBCDedit, messing about with command-line bcdedit can be quite dangerous (well not dangerous but u get wot i mean? )

Thanks!

Bold is mine

i must confess i meant easyBCDedit freely available from neosmart.net, it is basically a BCDedit.exe gui front-end, a similar tool for the power-user would be vistabootpro from vistabootpro.org. at $9.95 it is not free, but win 7 is fully supported plus they offer full tech-support via their online forums.

Thank you, but the questions were directed to "Blongs", the OP...

I was trying to find out his specific HW configuration, and
actions accomplished during his TS process.

I don't use tools for the 'power-user', and try to stick with the command-line stuff, like Microsoft does...

Although I agree with your policy of using the simple command line tools "like Microsoft" this makes interesting reading ...

Will my upgrade key work?-easybcd.png

I wouldn't be at all suprised if a familiar GUI made it's way into windows 8 for editing the BCD
