26 gig is right for the windows folder... (Is that what you meant by the "root folder"?)

Do you have 8 gig of ram installed? If so, as mentioned above, your hybernation file will be taking up 8 gig of ram on your C drive. You can move that to another drive or disable it if you don;t want to hibernate ever and that will free up 8 gig (It frees up the exact amount of HD space as the ram you have installed)
