Desktop icons copy when I move them

I am new to Windows 7. For some reason, when we move our desktop icons, they copy themselves. My son had the entire screen filled with copies of 5 icons! How do I stop copying the icons when they are moved?

    Thanks for any help!

It happens to me sometimes when I get a bit carried away with my mouse clicks. I have to slow down & pay more attention.

I was wondering why it did it, but even when I'm trying to do it slowly, it still does it and I'm not sure how to stop it!

Yes ! Are you, by any chance, holding control key while moving the shortcuts ?

While dragging the icon or after release, does windows show any sort of pop-up message, overlay or menu? Or does it simply duplicate without any other sort of indication at all?

All I am doing is clicking on it, holding the click, and moving it. I'm not at my laptop at the moment, but when it moves, it says something to the effect of "Copy to desktop" or something like that. I am not holding down the control button, just moving the icon.

Just clicking and dragging something in Win7 will copy it, it will not move it. To move it, you can right click and drag to the appropriate spot, then select Move.

Ok the "Copy to desktop" comes up when the control key is pressed while dragging like Arc said. So maybe the control key on your KB is stuck or busted or something? Or easy to press when you are using the mousepad (If this is a laptop?).
