    Beep codes

    Hi all,

I am having trouble with my daughters laptop, it beeps shortly after you press the power button about 8-10 times, then stops for about 10 seconds, then beeps about 25-30 times, then stops and boots up normal to the desktop.

This doesn`t happen everytime I boot it, I would say 5 out of 10 times, its irritatiing

The other irritating thing is does is when you open IE, it looks like someone else is typing a bunch of ............................ across the screen preventing me from typing anything, if I open Notepad, same thing...it weird!

    What I have done..so far

Ran CPU heat and stress tests ...OK

Video Card heat and stress test....OK

Taken memory out one by one (there is 2X3 gigs) OK

Memory test...........so far OK, in progress as I type

Blew all the dust out of the case

Reformated C drive and updated to service pack 1

    The specs on the laptop...

    Toshiba Qosmio

    CPU intel i7 Q720 @ 160GHZ

    6.00 GB RAM

    1 GB Video card

1 TB hard drive partitioned into 2 500GB

Win 7 Home Edition 64 bit

    Any thoughts

    Thanks in advance

The beeps aren't BIOS POST error beeps. It's registering a key press.

So it sounds like an issue with the keyboard. Anything been spilt on it recently? If not, it might just simply be buggered and most likely need to be cleaned or replaced.

+1 to smarteyeball. 8 short beeps by itself might point to a defective video card. But this sounds like a key is being depressed.

Interesting!!! I never thought of the keyboard, she does have a 4 year old that I am sure plays around with the laptop

    I will investigate...Thanks!!!

Smarteyeball, when I read your post, it made perfect sense, I cleaned the keyboard and so far (fingers crossed) no more beeps and funky weird ghost typing

    Thanks again!
