Aero is superb!!, i cannot think of a practical reason why you would want to disable it..??(unless your rig is not up to scratch)
On my work laptop, a Dell E6400 with a Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM and an Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M....I noticed that when I turned off the aero transparencies and such that my battery life increased with the 9 cell battery by about 45 minutes on Vista. So, I got about 6 hours with aero transparencies on and about 7 hours or so with it off. So, considering it doesn't really benefit me in work related tasks and such, I just keep it turned off.

I also keep the backlit keyboard off too.

i bet if you turn your screen off, you'll get even more life out of it!

anyway, vista is not windows 7...

You are correct. Win 7 consumes even more power at idle. Good point.

I still believe that his illuminated keyboard *might* have been pulling more power than Aero was.

I don't really know to be honest...I guess I am an Aero advocate at heart and hope that if Aero is gone in Windows 8 they will make something that is similar to it. Windows with *Windows* that are actually transparent makes sense due to the name

Gotta say I like it. I don't use a computer at work so the only one I see regularly is my own.
I don't even notice it now but I certainly do notice it's absence.:)

I'm definitely an Aeronaut. OK, Windows 7 with Aero on a HP dv7 series laptop gives me only 2 to 2.5 hours when on battery. But I am prepared, I have always one extra battery with me which is charged in a battery charger our tech wizard made for me. I also keep a car adapter always in my car so I can charge the battery when driving from one place to another, customer to customer.

    XP sux, Aero rox

Am I the only one that's kind of annoyed by the Aero GUI as of now? The transparency/blurring is really unnecessary. I think Windows should've gone with a Matte Shiny Plastic visual style, akin to Mac OS X.
If you want a look like mac os x, then go buy a mac!

No, but I obviously haven't been able to switch over my primary every day work machine to Windows 7 either. Probably going to be some time before my employer is ready to make the move. I might set up a dual boot for 7...I'm already dual booting Ubuntu for personal needs...but we also run a ton of Linux boxes as well...so that's something they are used to us using.

    I like Aero!

Everyone should use the one they like.

Right click desktop, click personalize, Basic and High contrast themes. One option.

Use google and you can find many styles, and one you like.
