Dude, welcome to the Seven Forums.

    1. You can turn Aero Peek off. After that, only deliberately clicking that minimal, small spot shows the desktop. This is quite idiot-proof method, it takes great effort to click that corner accidentally
    2. See above
    3. What's the size of that button? 8*24? Please, be serious!
    4. So the IE8 icon (or any other icon) on most desktops is reduntant and unnecessary, because you can always press Win-key + R and type iexplorer.exe (or other apps name) and hit Enter to launch it?
    5. Buy an old 286 computer and Win95. Only original things are worth to brag, only fools brag with a fake Rolex.

    With respect,

    Kari
    1. That does not call for restricting a human's freedom to be comfortable with their operating system.
    2. It may be small, but it still is annoyingly easy to click, considering its in an extreme location. No matter how far right and down you move your mouse, it will end up on that annoying button.
    3. Minimalistic is the way many people run. Clutter is annoying.
    4. Redundant. The iexplorer icon can be deleted. That's what I do. I delete it. Keeps things clean.
    5. Old OS means less compatibility. The only reason why I upgraded to windows 98, 2k, xp, and then windows 7 is so that I can run the latest open source applications. Not so that I can show the desktop by moving the mouse across the screen.

Once again, all this can be easily avoided by adding an option to turn it off.

Much ado about nothing at all, but I just now found the button you're so upset about.

    Kinda cool ...

In the short time I have had Win 7, I have been looking for that baby. I liked it in XP and I knew it had to be here somewhere. Glad you didn't like it so that you decided to post a message. Thanks,

    Huh.
I'm always surprised at how much effort people put into mocking other people online, injecting sarcasm, put downs, and the like. It's true than many people do not avail themselves of the many resources that exist online to find answers, or that they simply do not spend enough time on any given search and redirect their efforts to a forum, but that's sort of the point of a forum. Kind of an inductive vs. deductive situation, there's always someone who thinks their way is qualitatively better.

Anyways, I found this thread because the showdesktop button is annoying me. Don't get me wrong, i love the idea, and for most situations it works like a charm. Also, for those of you with dual monitor setups...i know for a fact that 7's show-desktop button has a wall to the right of it, so if you swing your mouse over to that corner, as long as you don't swing it above the button, the pointer will get caught there and still provides VERY EASY use of the showdesktop function.

edit; i actually might be wrong about this...i use a monitor and a projector, with the projector as an extended desktop...but my monitor is @ 1920x1200 and my projector is @ something lower...so it might just be that if i come at my button from anywhere in the space under where my second screen starts...then it catches. Ya, they definately need to add some options.

What I'm having a problem with is things like rainmeter, rainmeter's vista rainbar, objectdock by stardock, rocketdock, and I'm sure many other "desktop" utilities that sort of float around either on your desktop or on top of it. The problem is, these things are supposed to function like part of your desktop, and they have options like 'always on top' and so on...but when you use windows 7's button, they clear away these utilities too.

Now it may be that the blame for this problem lies with the programmers of these respective utilities themselves, or the 7 button, I'm not really sure, since I don't program, but it seems like these programs availed themselves of built in scenarios to make them function like parts of a desktop...so I'm inclined to think that the fault is with the programming of the button. There really should be options that you can choose, either getting rid of it, or expanding on its functionality.

In an effort to solve my problem, I'm going to try to use this guy CeIIular's utitlity, named....Show Desktop...(hehe) I had used it in the past on XP, since the idea for the button really is genius, but for him it is still a work in progress, and he just recently(as of yesterday i believe) added an aero peek function to it :) What I am hoping is that his button will sit ontop of Window's button, and override it, therefor solving my annoying issue, since he has options built into his utility which will prevent the showing of ALL the desktop.

I know this doesnt help the person who created this thread...but perhaps it might be helpful to others...part of the forum experience I'd say.

    Ciao

you can 'calm down' the button, by removing the mouseover action - right click taskbar >> properties >> uncheck 'use aero peek...' - but i don't know if you can get rid of it completely...
This has been really useful because I'm using SmartNav 4 (this is a software for disabled people who can't use a mouse) and it kept bouncing into show desktop and crashing. So a big thank you for your help

In order to remove the peek button in windows 7 taskbar - you can use this free utility called 7 Show Desktop Button Remover

Below is the link to where the utility has been reviewed

THX Micky Megabyte! It is too close to the scroll down arrow for me. I was inadvertently rolling over it and wondering why the desktop kept flashing on. I though it was Win 7 refreshing or something.

Two ways to look at the desktop which I use:
    WIN + D
    and
WIN + Spacebar (hold down WIN key until you don't want to see desktop)

WIN is the key with the wavy flag on it.

Oh yes, you might find WIN + T helpful.
