Any resolve for Forced Automatic Refresh & Sorting of files/folders

    Hi Brink,

Was there ever any kind of resolve for Forced Automatic Refresh & Sorting of files and folders in Win7 (I'm not talking about Auto Arrange and I need that like it is)

It's when you copy/paste files into a folder and they instantly disperse and sort themsleves upward within the list of files, instead of staying at the bottom of the list Waiting until a refresh/close action to then find their place.

    Hello Endeavor,

Auto Refresh is one of those features that just seems to be a bit buggy still. Sometimes it may refresh automatically, and other times you have to manually refresh. So far, there hasn't been an exact cause or solution found that works in all situations.

    Hi Brink,

Well for Folders it is constant and it always does it!

You know I wasn't meaning that files dont show up until a refresh right?

It's when you copy/paste files into a folder and they instantly disperse sorting themsleves upward within the list of files, instead of staying at the bottom of the list Waiting until you initiate a refresh/close action.
Also when you are re-naming files in a folder it does the same thing! ..etc...

For the 'Desktop' folder it only does that action if you have recently messed with the 'Sort By' and/or AutoArrange buttons, but then after a while, for whatever reason not dertermined yet by me, it works okay again and all items fall at the end of the small icon list.

Anyway, back to it happening to Folders, on a test partition once I have previously tried both FullRowSelect ditties (the .reg and the .vbs) but that didn't fix it and caused other side effects like you said earlier in this thread. I had also tried the "Disable_Windows_Explorer_Auto_Arrange.reg" and also the program UnWave too, but none of them still did not do fix the (AutoSort/AutoRefresh whatever you want to call it) issue.

I saw the petition thread for MS, I hope MS listens. That whole invlovement was well written and I can see a lot of effort went in to it from every frustrated person who deals with these similar issues.

Well, I was hoping you had run accross a cure for that, anyway, thank you for what you are working with for Free Sorting.... of which I had even tried that knowing it's not for the auto/sort/refresh issue I speak of.

Yep, but it's the same refresh issue that's responsible for both copy/paste, desktop, etc....

I wish I had a cure for it, but hopefully there may be one day though. For now, you might see if this below may help with it.

That's an interesting article, thanks Brink,

Relating to that article though, I do not currently have any problems it says, like with an item 'showing up' on the Desktop when you save/copy/create a file there, because on mine it always does show up.
(but yes I Have Personally seen that happen to someone else's Win7 Desktop, they had to manually refresh and then the file showed itself, and so I know that it does happen yes)

I'm going to take note of the article mentioning that key though, which interestingly just checking on mine - I do not have that key listing 'Anywhere' in my Win7 registry.

    <quote>
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
Here right-click and search for dontrefresh. If you find it, and if it has a value set to 1, change its value to 0.
    <un-quote>

Back to my desires/case though - just like with WXP does when I paste an item into a folder I have open it goes to the 'bottom' of the list first, or if I rename a file within a folder it stays right where it is at first... ...in Win7 upon doing either of those actions I do not want it to instantaneously autosort itself to alphabetical order where it goes like it does, I need it to wait! ...just like it does on WXP

Windows 7 forces automatic refresh and sorting of files and folders - it seems to be in an Always On state.

This article explains it very well so I won't try to improve on it:

    Endeavor,

I went ahead and moved this to a new thread since it's not the same issue that the tutorial was for.

What you want for "auto sort" is how it behaves for me by default. You might also see if resetting all folder views back to default may help.

Thanks for moving the thread, I hadn't intented to be off topic since at first searching that brought me there I thought I was on topic, but see your point now, thanks for moving it.

    Thanks for that new link

I see I am not able to send PM's yet?
There must be a rule set I haven't met for post count?

Brink, please can you please change the Title of my thread for accuracy sake. Change to:

"Is there any resolve for Forced Automatic Refresh & Sorting of files/folders in Win7"

    Thanks

...and you can deleted this particular post if you want

A virgin install of Win7 acts like I've posted, and so I'm not sure how yours does not act accordingly - unless of course you have applied different tweaked registry changes over time already.

That's what I'm thinking may happened to you. Something that you changed over time has affected this. I'm hoping that resetting your folder views back to default may help.

    Hi Brink,

In my last post I was actually telling you proven information that even on a Virgin install of Win7, nothing else done on it except installing itself first, that if you go anwhere on C:\ ""within any folder"" ..whether you create that folder or use one that's already there, and you have various misc files within that folder, and with that folder open - you copy assorted files or even one and then paste them back into that same folder as copies, those files will instantly automatically sort themselves in alphabetical order. The same thing happens even if you copy misc files to that open folder from anywhere else, those files will auto-sort themselves as well. fwiw, using any Reset All Folders To Default Folder Views, in this case, has no effect.

The point I was trying to tell from post one, that unlike WXP, Win7 Forces instant auto-sorting on C:\

In WXP if you do the same thing, the files will simply copy to the bottom of the list, and stay there ..until you manually refresh in whatever the number of ways.

Today I even restored an image of a fresh install Win7 SP0 & SP1 on some test rigs to double check my verifications (and to test other things too; that's what I do)

Anyway Note, that this issue does Not happen on any other logical partitions on the same Win7 controlled HD, it only happens on it's C:\ ..and within a folder, while it's open.

Now on the Desktop of Win7, if you have it set to icons, and you also have auto-arrange check-marked, it does the same thing 'but in a different way' when you save items to the Desktop, for instance with saving 'certain' folders to it, or a few 'file types' in specific situations, all of which will line up near the top left and of course will Re-Arrange the Desktop icons out of previous positions... maddening; but the good part about this Desktop problem is that I've seen on multiple occasions that for whatever reasons (and there are a few contenders) after a short period of time it will not scramble the icons anymore... that is unless you provoke it by messing with the auto-arrange and sort-by settings. Again these specific instances does not happen in WXP (although as you remember XP would scramble it's Desktop icons going into Safe Mode and back, also Resolution Changes... but that's another subject).

I'm not here to challenge you or anyone else and I accept that you may be much wiser than me and that's fine, actually I prefer it that way. My original post was just asking if anyone who knew of the specific problem I speak of, which is well documented already, had found a way around it.
I don't think anyone has yet.
This issue is not a big deal but just an annoyance.
    Thank you.

    ps
...and thank you Brink for fixing my PM ability, I see it's activated now, thanks. peace
