    Hello SouthCarolinaBo,

Are you trying to open this from a shortcut of Windows Explorer? If so, then you may need to fix it's target to point to %windir%\explorer.exe.

Does Windows Explorer open if you run the C:\Windows\explorer.exe file directly? You can type explorer.exe in the Start Menu search box and press enter for this.

Do you have any issues when trying to open other shortcuts or exe files?

Many thanks for the reply. The problem seems to be the lack of a file association. Excuse my inexperience but how do I use the %windir%\explorer.exe that you noted. I get the same message if I go to the explorer.exe file. If I right click the start button and then click "go to windows explorer" it takes to to a library file.

Windows Explorer opens to Libraries by default, so that would be correct.

I need to know what you are opening Windows Explorer from first. A shortcut from somewhere, from the icon on the taskbar, etc....

For now, to make sure it's not an association issue, download and merge the lnk (LNK) and exe options in the tutorial below to restore their default associations.

    windows explorer issue

I tried from the icon on the task bar and an icon i put on my desk top. Since you explained that it is opening correctly from the start button I guess I will stick with that and delete my icons. Thanks again for the advice.

    You're welcome.

If you wanted to change what Windows Explorer opens to, you could use the path and tutorial below to have it open to say the Computer window instead.

    %windir%\explorer.exe shell:MyComputerFolder
