Sudden slow boot up and shutdown

Hello everyone, my laptop has recently started booting up and shuting down pretty slow, it takes about 3 mins to start up, and shutdown, but when it boots up, it runs perfectly. It yous to only take a few seconds. I have no clue as to why this is happening. i'm not very knowledgeable about computer details, so if you need them, where do i find them? I do know i'm running Windows 7 and have Intel core i3. I run mcafee virus scan everyday, defrag and clean my disk everyday. Any help is greatly appreciated

A good place to start is with an anti-malware. Download this and run it
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download Reboot afterwards and see if it helps. Let us know how it comes out.

What Anti-Virus software are you using? The major pay-for ones on the market are notorious for slowing your system down during these times.

and +1 to bigmck. Malewarebytes is usually a good place to start any system diagnostic.

Since you said yourself that you were not very computer knowledgable, the people here are and they can heip. Two of us told you to do the same thing. That might be a good first step to solving your problem.

I used to swear by Kaspersky Antivirus. Ran it every day and thought I was fine.

Until I started getting BSOD at least once a day.

Downloaded and ran Malewarebytes at the suggestion of a senior member on this forum. It found a virus. Quarantined and deleted it.

BSOD stopped and any since then have been because of my own tinkering with my Overclock or a Game Mod.

Since then I've gotten rid of Kaspersky and switched to the free microsoft security essentials that I run daily and run Malewarebytes once a week.

I notice a big difference in start up and shut down times. Did the same thing with my wife's laptop. That made a HUGE difference since her's doesn't have an SSD drive.

MucAfee is the worst AV you can use and causes lots of problems we solve here by having users uninstall it and replace it with a free lightweight AV like Microsoft Security Essentials.

Then work through these troubleshooting steps.

In addition check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers.

Once you've completed all these and other steps suggested, if the problem persists we can help you by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace which can pinpoint the exact cause.
