DXDIAG says that my intel core i3 has 4 cores

    hi there,
this is not really a problem im just curious.
i have an acer aspire 5742 laptop with an intel core i3 M 380 @ 2.53 ghz, 8GB ram intel hd graphics and windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
when i run dx diag it says that i have 4 cpu's at 2.5ghz
when i go on computer it dosent say i have a quad core cpu just the 1 core cpu.
if i run cpuz it says i have 2 cores.
i was wondering if i do have 2 or 4 cores and if i do how do i unlock them?
    any help would be appriciated

You have 2 cores, here's Intel spec page for you.Intel® Core

As to unlocking, I'm afraid you'll need a.n. other to help there, it's not my forte (never actually found the need).

iibenii, welcome to the Seven Forums.

All of those readings are correct in their own way. The i3 380M is a dual core CPU with hyperthreading,

    Intel® Core

One thing you didn't mention was Task Manager, which when on the Performance tab should show a graph for 4 cores.

Press Windows+Pause/Break the system properties window will open and list what the CPU is. Some 3rd party benchmark/testing software just sees threads as cores. Your CPU is a dual core chip.

while im on the processor can my acer aspire 5742 have an i5 inside.
can i buy one then replace my i3 or is it one of the computers you cant change?

I would contact Acer support for swapping CPUs. I would think it's possible but not real easy unless you have experience taking laptops apart.
This is my system properties showing Dual core.
