Windows 7: bug: windows maximize behind taskbar

15 Jul 2010   #21

Windows 7 x64

Since I encountered the fancy stuff on my machine right now I started searching for a solution and finally landed here.

My solution is: with an Intel integrated graphics controller you can switch the display mode you are using (Win+P hotkey) and windows will respect the task bar again. Perhaps also just changing the resolution may work.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
Easier way and quicker way.

Takes a minute to work.

1)Set AUTOHIDE on.
2)goto taskmanager and kill the explorer.exe (end the process)
3)start new task and type in explorer.exe
4)should return back to normal otherwise set autohide off
5)kill and restart the explorer.exe

Windows 7 Ultimate (32 and 64 bit)

I found this post via Google search and thought I'd add my experience.

I had this same issue on my work laptop.
  • It happened after I attached an external monitor
  • I've never manually repositioned my taskbar, however, sometimes I close the lid of my laptop and Windows temporarily transfers the taskbar to the external monitor.
  • Unlocking the taskbar, resizing it, and then re-locking it fixed the problem (at least for now).
So perhaps this is just more confirmation that this is somehow related to external monitors and/or repositioning the taskbar.

When it happens again simply Shift+right click the icon for the offending app then click "move" then move it down with your arrow keys.

Windows 7

I had the same problem. Start the task manager (Ctrl + Alt+ Delete), click the "Processes" tab, look under "Image Name" for "explorer.exe," right click, and select "end task." You'll see your taskbar and other things dissapear. Click "File," select "Run," and type in "explorer.exe" then "Ok." Your taskbar will come back and your windows should start appearing as normal again. I hope this helps!

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Simply 'drag' the taskbar

This fixes it for me:
  • click and hold on an empty spot on the taskbar
  • drag upwards
  • release the mouse

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

I thought I had this problem but realized it was only after using the magnifier. So after every use I have to pull the taskbar up and then back down to normal. Is this the case with anyone else?

Same here, when used with magnifier

I have the same problem. When I start magnifier on one of my monitors the start bar does exactly as described.
My solution is to not have "Lock the Taskbar" checked and then double click the top of the taskbar, this will cause it to "reset"

Note that I've been having this very issue since the Windows 7 betas.

Windows 7 32bit

This is bugging the hell out of me.

Has anyone found an actual fix, never mind ways to get the app back out from under the taskbar, i know how to do that.....but an actual fix that stops it from happening in the first place?

Confirm magnifier "bug"

Even if the thread is old I can confirm that using magnifier causes this bug
(or if it's by design )

No update has fixed this to date 2011-09-16.

I'm using the "dsargent-method" 4 now...
