Windows 7 64 bit Hangs on Shutdown & More

Hello All

I am hoping that someone can help me with this one:

I am running Windows 7 64 and whenever I attempt to shut-down my laptop, it just hangs on the "shutting-down" screen...

Here are some other pieces of info that might help:

* The machine will shut down if a I start Windows in Safe Mode

* The machine still hangs when shutting down if I attempt a 'clean boot' (meaning that I have disabled all non-Microsoft services)

* If I look through the Event Viewer, I notice the following errors:
Source Event ID Task Category
System Restore 8211 None
System Restore 8193 None
SideBySide 35 None
Application Hang 1002 (101)

* This computer is a little bit loaded--Hard Drive is about 99% full

Any help that can be offered is Greatly Appreciated

Work through these troubleshooting steps especially achieving a Clean Boot and the cleaning/defragging steps. I'd also move some data off now or delete it to free up space.

The steps show how to google repeat errors' verbatim text to find how others solve them.

I'd also run the hardware tests just to clear those.

If all else fails run the tool which the Pro's use to trace these hangs: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

Windows 7 64 bit

Thank You Both for the suggestions

* I would like to remove some of the programs from the CPU but unfortunately, the Program Unistall is also hanging...

That said, I'll remove the data, but I am not too sure that is the prob...

@GregRocker: Trying to work through the list you sent, but I am not sure that I will be able to.... Is my main goal to get a clean boot?

Clean Boot will help if it's a program running in the background that's causing the problem, which might be hinted when you study the logs and use the System Resources in the steps - including the one in lenherus2000's image above.

You should also check for infection and then run SFC -SCANNOW Command to see if you have damaged system files. If it fails then boot into System Recovery Options to run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

But the steps that fail are also important to report back as it gives us clues to help you. So be thorough.

Thank you for showing me this tool

The tool did note that 3 programs were causing Windows to enter Hibernate or Sleep too slowly...

They were DellDock.exe -&- McAfee HTML UI Container.exe

(That said, the tool did find anything that was preventing/delaying shut down)

* What do I do about this issue?

MucAfee is one of the worst problems we see on Win7. Try to uninstall it now in Control Panel and then use the MacAfee Removal Tool from its website found by Googling to get the leftovers because it is like a bad infection.

Replace with Microsoft Security Essentials and the Win7 firewall.

The other problem program Dell Dock is part of the bloatware and useless factory utilities which Dell adds in that throttle good performance of the best OS ever. You can either Clean up factory bloatware or use the Win7 installer to Clean Reinstall Windows 7 Factory OEM which is a much-superior install.

Windows 7 64 bit

Hi & Thanks

I tried to run the SFC -SCANNOW Command from Windows as an Admin, but it did not run, rather returned the message that:

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service

* Also I will try to remove McAfee... The only problem is that program unistall (from Control Panel) is also hangin

You have damaged System files. Boot into System Recovery Options Command Line to run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot.
Run it until files are repaired or reports they cannot be repaired.

I would first disinfect your OS running Malwarebytes, in Safe Mode if necessary. If you cannot run it then download and burn to CD or write to flash stick Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

System files may not repair if not first disinfected.

You must also be thorough. Do not skip any steps (like SFC from Command Prompt) without discussing them first.
