Two OS choices when booting but only one OS is Installed?

I have Win 7 upgrade retail version. After installing, there is a folder labeled Old Windows (the WinXP I need to have on the drive in order for Win7 to upgrade). I deleted the Old Windows folder but I still get two choices when I boot the PC, as shown below ...

    Earlier Version of Windows
    Windows 7

How do I remove "Earlier Version of Windows" so the PC will boot right into Win 7 ? I checked using msconfig and it displays only one OS and it appears as follows:

Windows 7 (C:\Windows) : Current OS; Default OS

nothing else appears in the msconfig window

have you tried just setting the boot menu display time to 0?

That is a strange problem though, have you ever used startup repair on this system?
It really sounds like the bootmgr is confused.

The windows.old folder contained your XP settings and files. Did you upgrade to Win 7 on the same HDD that XP was on?

No, because that would be too easy ... hehe

I tried it just now and it says 3 is the minimum I can enter ? So I tried 3 and that works ok. mAybe it still finds the deleted Old Windows folder? I'll try using a "space sweeper" utility to zero the unused areas and see if that fixes it.

The Windows.old will not effect your OS options, its just a folder to save your former OS data.

Yes, and I deleted that folder right after booting to the Win 7 desktop for the first time after installing. I expected the Earlier Version of Windows to disappear, but it didn't.

I jsut wiped all free space on drive C and did a reboort but it's still there. No prob, it comes and goes in a flash and auto-boots to the desktop now.

thanks for the fast replies {8^D

You should have booted installer to avoid windows.old, have access to drive options to repartition, get a cleaner upgrade install. The installer sees XP at boot to allow use of Upgrade version key during install.

Enter msconfig>Boot to highlight then delete the extra listing.

If not there, use EasyBCD in Magus' link to Edit Boot Menu, delete ghost listing.
