Windows 7: Copy Removable Storage Service from Vista to 7?

I already resolved this using driver from Vista x64 installation and force Win7 to use it. It works and it seems to be much easier than trying to modify infs and sign something although I'm able to do that ;-). Anyway thanks for links, I'm sure they will come in useful .

> Brainer:
My tape drive is this one (sorry, in Czech only, but it's mainly about pictures ), originally external, now internal. Win7 recognizes this drive correctly, I was just curious if there would be something newer on WinUpdate and it was. So it is again easier for me to use something I don't have to download on my own .

Hi Wift, My DLT 8000 is now recognized by my Win7 but my problem is which good backup software I could use with my tape drive? Couldn’t use ntbackup because RSM is not anymore exist in Win7, I tried to figure out how to extract RSM from a Vista but in reality, not very simple. Many hours to do the job without know if it’s will work. I tried to install RSM on Vista, then transfer NTBACKUP on this Vista, but it’s didn’t recognized the RSM and my tape drive. I have Backup Exec 8, 9, 10 and 11 but there’re incompatible install with Win7 (same if run in compatibility mode) and couldn’t install. I tried Backup Exec 12 and 13 (2010) but It’s couldn’t install on a PC not in a domain I tried Uranium, Backup Assist, Backup4all, etc. but need to pay a full license to be able to backup on tape (when option is supported is supported)

Question, which software are you using?

Thanks

Right now I am in the same position. I have skipped Vista completely and now I'm in the process of migration from WinXP x64 to Win7 x64. On XP x64 I use NTbackup, on Win7 it's dead end for me right now. The reason why I am here in this thread is in it's title. I would like to transfer RMS from Vista to 7. I even did not start to try it because I'm very busy (job and also private life).

Same as you, I’m probably too busy to spend many hours for probably a not working or unstable solution. What I plan is this (I know it’s very tweaky but probably will work! I hope). Same as me, your SCSI is recognized in our Win7. With VMWARE (sure it work with VMW 6.5-156735 on XP Host), install a guest OS as XP (probably will work too with Vista). Then, shutdown the XP guest, and add a Hardware call “Generic SCSI Device” and normally, you supposed to see you Tape drive as TAPE0, etc finish config. Restart your guest XP, you supposed to see your tape drive in your XP. If not, I think you need to install driver in your guest (for myself, I installed nothing and my tape drive was automatically detected). I do this test few weeks ago on MY old XP Host OS. For mylself, I wll spend time on this. Then after, I think you know the forward….

Good luck

Hi Wift, before spending time to copy RSM from Vista to Win7, I installed RSM on my Vista, tried XP NtBackup and didn't detect RSM etc. For me, I'll abandon copy RSM.

There is NTBackup downloadable from Microsoft's web for Vista. I suppose it will work under Win7 too, if there will be RSM.

Yep but you have only restore option. Backup option is not available in this tool.

Hi Wift, this was I made and it work!!!! For me, this will be my BACKUP solution to move my data offsite.

My Setup:
- Windows 7 Ultimate English – 64Bits (On my test Machine with only (I know it stupid) 1Go with a 40 H.D. but it’s for a test before moving this setup on my new I7-920 with 6Go, 1To h.d.)
- SCSI AHA-2940U2W (for any others readers: Yes, Yes, Yes, I was able to have my old 2940U2W functional in Win7-64Bits. I signed the aic78u2.sys from Win2003-RC2-64 driver with my own test Certificate and I used djsvs.inf (renamed in aic78u2.inf) from Vista-64 with some modif for installation to be able to load in Win7 in “TestMode” but not very elegant. Re.: Win7 must be configured in Test Mode to load a driver with a test certificate but need to live with a watermark or hack your Win7 to have ModeTest watermark disappear. I’m waiting for an used Adaptec 29160 bought on Ebay where supported in Win7 by Adaptec drivers and compatible with a 32Bits PCI slot )
- DLT-8000 with 64Bits driver downloaded from Quantum
- I used VMWare WorkStation 7 (I’m sure it’s work with v6.5 too)
- SCSI and Tape drive MUST be present and working in “Device manager” of the Win7 before continuing.

In VMware:
- Install a Guest Windows XP or directly import your old Physical XP in VM (File, Import or Export and follow instructions), you will virtualized your physical to virtual (P2V)
- When installed, shutdown your Guest XP
- In VMWare, select you’re Virtual Machine, then in VMWare menu, select VM, Setting, Add, Select “Generic SCSI Device”, then if everything is Ok, you supposed to see TAPE0 in list, check the “Connect at power on” box, then finish.
- When return in setting, keep the default in “Virtual device node” list
- Still in Setting, go in “Options” tabs, “Shared Folders” option, share your host drive (Ex.: c:\) or dir as you want. Make sure the “Read Only” option is not Checked if you want restore!
- Check the “Map as a network driver in Windows guest” box – Because NTBackup is too dummy to backup a VMWARE share drive!!!
- Boot your Guest XP
- In my case, VM was mapped my host share to Z:\ in my Guest XP
- You’ll see your tape backup in device manager and in RSM of your Guest XP
- Use NTBACKUP as before!!!!! Or your old backup software from your Old XP. Just go, like in my case z:\, to select and so one…
- I’m very surprise by the performance (of my elephant) with one 1Go on my Hosts! I’m hurry to receive my 29160 and move this setup to my I7.
