    How do I turnoff all Indexing of files & get rid of new 2 attributes


    Hi all,

    New Win7 user HomeEdition X64.

    How do I turn off all indexing of files/folders?

    I have a 500GB HDD partitioned as 3 parts, C=OS, D=My Data, E=Misc.

    I have a pgm that will search thru my files/folders better than Windows search, so I tried to get rid of Windows indexing - had to manually turn off quite a few by hand, but there are SOME that it tells me I can NOT do it, even though I am operating as administrator.

    Also, I have seen that there are now 2 additional letters than show up in the attribute column "I" & "N". The I meaning that the file is 'indexed' and the N that it is NOT!

    Is there not a way to get rid of BOTH these attributes?
    I have tried but when you get rid of the I it shows the N and if a file has the A attribute and I get rid of it, the I or the N show up! Very perplexing!

    Hi Sue,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

    I'm not familiar with the new attributes, and I suspect it might be something you can't do much about. But please do let us know if you find a solution to that one.

    As to indexing there are two things you can do (I do both).
    , given that you said you have turned off the indexing of other stuff (which I assume means "Allow files on this drive to have their contents indexed" is unticked.

    1. Go into control panel and turn off indexing of everything in there (navigate through the drives and folders), and remove the ticks from everything.

    2. This one is sometimes frowned upon by some people, and if you decide to do this be very careful.

    If you run services.msc (Start, run), you can turn off the Windows Search feature by setting the status to disabled and then stopping the service.

    I've been doing this on all windows editions since search was introduced and on hundreds of computers and never had a problem. But if by some freak of nature you do have a problem, just set the service back to automatic and reboot your computer (or just start the service).

    Windows 7 SSD Tweaking Guide
    under
    Disable Indexing on your SSD
    I don't want indexing activity on the SSD but I also have used a Search program Agent Ransack/ FileLocator Lite for a couple of years which I'm very happy with on spinners as well.
