I'm not sure what you are asking, but I can tell you there are quite a bit more than 5 major important files. If you explain what you are trying to find out, we can go from there.

This is a question in my school assignment: Let me quote the question:

List the names, locetions and contents of 5 Major system files in Windows 7.

I he means the most important 5 ?

When searching on the internet I only found of the XP version!!

By the way, thanks for your reply!

By the way, I suspect your teacher wants you to research it, right?

You aren't going to find it because there aren't 5 important system files. I mean, you can't simply pick the 5 most important overall. There are well more than 5 that are crucial for system operation...and their importance varies depending on your criteria.

It sounds like you are either misunderstanding the assignment, or your teacher doesn't have a clue as to what they are asking.

Aye, the internet as the source for answers; copy and paste.

Thinking it through, what components make up any Operating System?

Which ones are major and minor? Where are these located and how does Microsoft name these components?

With the XP answer on hand, it should be easier to compare and contrast, and then correlate.

    XP

    1/ BOOT.INI

    2/ NTLDR

    3/ NTBOOTDD.SYS

    4/NTUSER.DAT

    5/ NTDETECT.COM

Couldn`t find anything for 7. But then I didn`t look that hard.

I would have great difficulties to find the most important 5 files. Any of the several thousand candidates will bring the system down when missing or corrupted.

But I can name the 5 most system folders :

    Program files
    Program data
    Users
    Windows
    Drivers
