My laptop fan run too slow, my CPU is really hot!

Hi everyone,

I've got some weird problem with my Win7 and my laptop fan. First, this is my laptop spec:

- Toshiba Satellite 09V
- Intel Dual-Core @ 1.5Ghz
- 3Gb Ram

The problem is before with XP, when my CPU get the 65oC, my fan turn on and turn very fast to evacuate the most air possible.

But with the new Win7, the fan turn but at a low speed, wathever the cpu temperature. Today, i've got 82oC and the fan don't turn faster to cool down the CPU.

In the performance setting in Win7, iV'e choose the "high performance", to get all the juice from my laptop (and in this setting, when I switch to battery, my laptop can run 2h30).

So, what can be the problem? Return to XP (oh please no...)

Thanks alot!

There's some discussions about x86 vs. x64 where x64 seems to run considerably hotter on laptops. You running x64 by any chance?

I'm sure you will not have to return to XP, having to return to that or Vista is a form of torture beyond comprehension. =)

I've seen this problem before with other laptops. Let me look into it a bit, have you made sure all your drivers are updated? (check Device Manager to see if any are having problems)

Could also be a physical cause such as dust or dirt plugging up the fan or the airflow somewhere in the cooling system. You could try opening the box up and looking for dust or dirt.

I hope this doesn't apply to you but my laptop started displaying somewhat similar symptoms just before the system board self destructed. It's in the shop now getting a new system board (under warranty fortunately).

If its still under warranty (the OP's laptop) and he opens it up, I believe warranty is voided.

There are fan control apps that you can change the profile in so it starts earlier and stops later. Just goggle fan control.

edit: this one is for dell's

First, my fan is clean... because i've restore a old backup (with XP) and the fan run really faster...

Now i'm back with Win 7 and the speed of the fan get slow again... So it's really not the fan but the OS (i think)... but why?

@zigzag3143: Ok... I will try to get a google on that.

They're also some good cooling mats that would probably be a good investment for your lappy..
