Windows 7: Problem 1 - How to download IE8 for Windows 7

09 Apr 2012   #11

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

Okay, here's an update on the situation, and I don't know if a new thread is necessary or not....
  • I restored the advanced settings in IE9, and did another reset - all to no avail.
  • I managed to get IE8 on the PC. When I clicked on Live mail I at least got the signon screen - not just a blank page. However when signing on the page flashes about a half dozen times and finally some read letters appear on the signon page - The Windows Live Network is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons and it lists a couple of bogus reasons - bogus because I can access the page using Firefox
  • I reinstalled IE9, and now get the same message on it as I did on IE8 (see bullet above)
  • I added to the trusted sites. Nada
  • I made sure that protected mode was enabled. It was.
  • If I run IE9 without add-ons Windows Live mail displays correctly. Yet if I disable every add-on in IE9 and try to go to Live Mail, I still get the 'unavailable msg
Firefox, however continues to work.

I would try a Repair Install as a last resort before Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. which likely will save time and end up with an install that'sl better than a new computer.

Before I do the repair install I'm going to try this thing I just found

1. Internet explorer 8 or 9 => Tools => click 'Internet Options'
2. Content (tab) => click 'Certificates'
3. Personal (tab) => click 'Advanced'
4. Inside certificate purposes, enable 'Secure Email'

I'll try it tomorrow and report back.

No change using the above 4 step process.

I don't want to do a repair install, or a reinstall of the OS for this relatively minor problem. He's had no problems with IE9 other than this, and a suitable work-around was to rename the Firefox desktop icon to Windows Live and set the homepage accordingly.

I'd just sort of like, for my own peace of mind, to get to the bottom of the problem.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I have the same issue with a friend's computer. I have tried all the same fixes and nothing is working to fix the issue. I wanted to roll him back to ie8, but when I installed ie9, ie8 is not on the computer. Foxfire works, but he isn't comfortable with it.

I can't find anywhere on the internet to download ie8 for Win7 x64

Any suggestions?

Win7 sp1 Pro 64bit / XP sp2 Pro (games only)

FWIW and probably not much, there is a video download/record program that I have found that seems to play hell with accessing some MS websites with Win7/ ie9. Have no idea why but it works well with XP or 7 ie8 but cuts off site when useing 9.
