haha, actually I had the idea right away :)
well glad you did. I wouldn't have ever figured the .exe was becoming corrupt ! why is it even being re-written at all ?

o well no matter , thx again.
I honestly can't answer why it becomes corrupt. The simple answer is that it shouldn't.
But eh, what are you gonna do? (Besides find a fix for it )

    You're welcome. Glad I helped

    It may help

I found an app known to cause this issue and sometimes causes the device manager link in system properties not to work and that is Badaboom, it has a submenu called badaboom in the context menu, I solved my issue by just removing the entry

It was not working in a clean install but it was in a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade. Maybe that file is not overwritten using upgrade.
Anyway, great job on coming up with a fix. Thanks again.

well, for what it's worth, i figured out the culprit in my situation. i was having the same problem and, furthermore, could not run windows backup. thanks to a few people on these forums hinting that it was a context-menu problem, i was able to isolate the offending program. i knew that in my case it had to be either winamp, winrar, vlc, or quicksfv. i removed them one by one and tested both manage and backup. turns out it was quicksfv that did the trick for me, in the end.

    Hi,

I have just noticed an odd occurrence when i right click on Computer either on my desktop or the start menu & click Manage, it does nothing, just a timer circle for a sec and thats it. can run the Computer Management shortcut fine. I have had win 7 installed for a little while now and i know it was working fine up until yesterday.

I have seen others with the same or similar problem with running the manager from the computer context menus but the only answer iv seen is to do a repare install. There must be something better as how do i know it wont just happen again ? would any1 know what might have caused this? & if im really lucky how to fix it.

    Thx All,
    JackDinn.

I just registered on these forums personally to thank you TheVines, i had this exact same problem as Jack. I was searching & searching all over the net and couldn't find a single topic about this issue until this thread popped up. You've saved me a very painful formatting process so a big thanks for that.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I had the same problem, it started after I had installed Steganos Safe 2008. Following this install I could not right click and run "Manage" from the Computer menu on the start up screen. I uninstalled Steganos Safe 2008 and the problem was resolved. (By the way this function works OK
with Steganos Safe 2008 and Vista).
I logged onto the Steganos site and saw that they were advertising Steganos Privacy Suite 11 as Windows 7 compatible. I purchased Privacy Suite 11 and on installing it, found that the problem returned, on uninstalling this programe, right clicking on " Manage" worked OK.

On contacting Steganos the instructed me to reinstall Privacy Suite 11 and go into C:\Program Files\Steganos Privacy Suite 11 and rename the file ShellExtension.dll to ShellExtension.dllBAK, having done this, right clicking on "Manage" now works and opens Computer Management.

I feel that this is a workaround rather than a proper fix and have asked Steganos to get back to me with a "patch" or an update, I await their reply.

My version of Windows 7 is 7600.16385.x86 (full retail installed on a new hard drive), and the version of Steganos Safe 2008 is 10.1.1 (Revision 5486) and Steganos Privacy Suite 11 is version 11.0.06 (Revision 7858)

Given the above perhaps your problem is caused with a program behaving in a similar manner.

    Best wishes,

    Jim.

To get yours working again, simply take control over the corrupt one, and replace it with the compmgmtlauncher from vista. Then it will work again
Thank you very much! It worked on my machine (tripleboot XP, Vista and W7 Ultimate RTM). I googled almost the whole WWW untill I saw your post overhere! Great!!!
