    fake Windows 7 software...

    Hi
I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad recently acquired from Ebay. The Seller has installed some crap called ' Windows 7 Extreme Edition R1'.
When I run slmgr /dlv it tells me its kosher Windows R(7), OEM_SLP channel - but
the OS properties and splash screen tell me its Windows Extreme Edition R1. ( 32 bit of course)
Windows Genuine Advantage software does not see this as a fake; so I'm guessing the boot sector\MBR is seriously modified at install. MSE doesn't detect anything either.
Has anyone got any more info on this fakery before I send PayPal after the seller with baseball bat ?
    Regards

Did you get a legit license key with your purchase? Were you supposed to? If yes, just download the approriate .iso from MyDigitalLife and install. If that wasn't clearly spelled out in the auction, you may have little recourse.

I wouldn't put a single thing onto that machine that I trust. If you got a good deal and are happy with the laptop for the price, you might want to just get a legit OS and reinstall on your own.

Whats "mydigitallife"? Is it an authorized Microsoft iso distributor? I would be wary of downloading from anywhere other than that......

I'll forgive the question since you are new here. :) The link has been posted hundreds of time, and it is a legit, Microsoft-owned site. Posting links to non-Microsoft site, aside form being a bad idea, wouldn't be allowed here.

No apologies needed. I was just giving you a hard time because of the number of people who keep aksing for the link, claiming they can't find it. It's posted several times a day! You'll see that, I'm sure. Welcome aboard...this is a great forum to be on.

Yes, they are one in the same, and both trusthworthy from Microsoft.

Do you have a COA sticker on the machine with the licensed Win7 version printed on it? If not the seller should have given you one which shows it is Genuine retail Win7 with a Product Key to reinstall.

With a Product Key on COA sticker, everything you need to reinstall the licensed version is here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If there is no COA sticker or other documentation, you can audit the installed Product Key with Belarc Advisor, clean reinstall an official copy of the installed OS provided in tutorial above, then try to activate it with the key which Belarc found. If it won't activate then it is a bootleg version. You'll need to buy another key to insert.

Under some circumstances where documentation is presented, MS Customer Service will replace non-Genuine Windows if you cooperate with them in determining its source.

    Hi,

Please run this tool, then click copy (ignore any error messages if they pop-up) and paste they contents back here in your next reply using CTRL+V, and I'll take a look at this for you.
