    Win 7 still BETA ??

Just to make your day, to add to the abnormality of win7.

One opens a new envelope, into it one places 40 icons of similar program nature, and the envelope is suitably labelled.

After opening the envelope a few times, one notices, many of the icons have moved around. The programs themselves
stayed put in alphabetical order, but have different icons other than designated by the .exe.

Some Icons have arrived from outside the envelope, non associated programs.

To try and restore the correct icon via 'properties' does not work, the now incorrect icon, repeats itself to desktop,
even if the correct icon is shown in properties.

Trying to re-establish the correct icon, directly from the .exe within explorer, fails to, only the incorrect appears.

Oh we do have fun with win7 (Beta ??) This has never happened in previous system's. So after you have stopped laughing, perhaps you have an answer.

Not quite sure what your point is, but I'm thinking you may have malware problems, so you might want to consider using Malwarebytes a whirl.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

I can understand your perceived frustration, but I have to say that many of us get on really well with Windows 7 and consider it the best OS Microsoft have produced.

There is obviously something causing your problems and I'm more inclined to think it's virus-related rather than a problem with Windows 7.

I would love to disagree with you, but after using 7 for a year now I have to admit I don't miss XP that much at all

Well, I have replaced the 7 startup and shutdown sounds with those of XP, but apart from that I've made a full conversion.

I've forgotten all about XP although I have to say it is one of Microsoft's better offerings.

I made the mistake of buying Vista when it was first released and regretted it almost from day one and find Windows 7 is far superior to it.

Windows 7 sometimes forgets the icons on my PC.
The correct icon is shown in the "Properties".
    It usually fixes itself (eventually).

If a malware scan finds nothing, perhaps rebuilding the icon cache will help.

Not to put too fine a point on it but Microsoft has always used the customer to burn in and debug their software. They only have Beta.

Thanks everyone for your tips and comments, the one that triggered my thoughts in the right direction, was the Malware idea. Now although I have Kaspersky running, 'things' (for want of a name),slip out of software and cause
peculiar things. I have this happen from time to time on my win98 workhorse.Yep WIN98, you read right. It's off line, but I do on occasions put in new software, and thats where the trouble starts.
The (always) answer is in my old version of AD-Aware Se, (definitions 1,700+days old). But I slipped it into this win7 laptop and run it. Hard to believe, but it found 13 none critical peculiarities. Deleted all. Like magic, all my icons got back into place. You may wonder why Kaspersky had not 'seen' them, me to. Glad for my old win98 faithful. Jack76
