Sounds like a major, and expensive, repair problem.- As the screen is in the lid, he could have permanently damaged it. At best, depending on where he made the heaviest contact, it might be where the screen cable (often through the hinge) joins the motherboard.

If you could post the make and model of the laptop it would be helpful as then we can find service and repair guides for you to be able to fix it yourself.
In the meantime, can you use the computer if you connect it to an external display via a VGA or HDMI port? If so, then the screen is bust. If you don't see anything with it connected to an external display, there is probably a fault with the motherboard or some other internal component.

Compaq presario CQ43. Tried the external screen but no luck. Anything we should push to make external screen work. tried Fn F5 and F8.

No bootable disk - What does this mean? I have a compaq presario that keeps showing this. I put another HDD in and it is saying the same thing. Does it mean the old HDD was buggered and I need to do something to the new one to sort out boot order or anything? or is this not a HDD issue. I have two broken compaq presarios here. One with no screen working and one saying no bootable disk drive. Help. I must be able to get one going? Thanks

    TWardy,
You already have a thread going on the non-bootable unit.

    Let's keep that problem there.

Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.

Turn it on and leave it for the time it takes to usually boot. Do you hear any login sounds? Also, press the windows key and P to try connecting to an external screen. If that doesn't work and it doesn't seem to boot at all there is a component issue. Either get compaq/hp to fix it or send it to a computer repair shop. We obviously can't fix internal parts on here.

I would look around inside to see if anything is obviously broken. You can google the exact model to possibly see a more exact video tutorial, however this one shows laptop basics:
