High RAM usage please help me

Please help.
I'm having trouble with high ram usage in my windows 7 home premium x64.
My physical memory(RAM) usage reaches about 60%-80% when starting up and more worst when i opened any apps resulting to slow performance.
I had tried scanning and defragmenting my computer many times.
I had been searching the net for days finding a solution for this problem any suggestions, comments, instructions and directions will be much appreciated thank you..

That sounds normal. You only have 2 GB and you are running Windows 7 x64, which does, by default, consume a little more memory than Windows 7 x86.

That being said, you have to break your way of thinking from XP...where RAM usage is bad. That RAM is being used for caching to speed up your system, and would be cleared if you tried to run something intensive, like a game, Photoshop, etc. Since you already have Windows 7 x64, you could easily pop in another 2 GB, and your system would see and use all of it....but that's not a necessity.

I see so if i put another 2gb ram it would be more better?

Sir i have a one last question.
In the last few days my ram usage was atleast ranging from 20%-30%. Yesterday it was about 40-50 and as of today 60-80% is that normal?
and also when i played some games it displayed a gray background which had never happened before or worst it would not run or respond and also sometimes due to lack of ram availability i could not run some programs that i need

Only if you are running out of memory (meaning you are getting pop-up messages saying you are running low on memory). 2 GB is pretty much the minimum for a regular system right now, but depending on what you do with your computer, you might not need any extra memory. Just because your memory percentage reaches a high number, that doesn't mean you actually have a problem. If you doubled the memory to 4 GB, you could still see the same 60-80% usage.

When you say the issue was due to the lack of memory...did you get an error message? If so, definitely add more. If not, the problem could be elsewhere. Memory is ridiculously cheap right now, so it won't hurt to add more.

You have about 100 processes running---that's well above average. I usually have about half that many. All of that takes more RAM.

Many of your process may be unnecessary.

You may be able to whittle them down by looking at the startup tab of msconfig. How many things are checked there?

Or close applications that you are not using at the moment.

Or buy more RAM. It is very, very cheap right now.

My work machine is on 30% usage right now and I have hardly anything open. I'm interested as to how you have such a significant jump in RAM usage. It certainly isn't normal to see these jumps, especially over the course of a few days.

Have you made any changes or ran any installations prior to the huge RAM usage?

yes, i had received some pop up messages due to lack of memory and sometimes it would just exit.
well then thanks a lot :) i'll try adding some ram and see ..

As of the last 2 months I haven't installed any new or changes on my system except from automatic updates.

Also as I remember this problem started when I was using emulator to test some games but I'm not that sure if that was the cause.

I have a feeling this may go a bit deeper than just adding some more RAM.

But, in all honesty you can only benefit from 2GB more RAM. It's like £10 for 2GB in the UK. I'd definitely say go for that, and if you're still having absurd amounts of usage then come back here.
