Does Win 7 Identify Battery Back Up?

I have a Battery Back Up made by APC which came with software and I installed the software. Needless to say this software controls the functions of the back up,ie: How long to leave the computer on in case of power failure so that Windows may be shut down without loss of data. Somewhere, I think I read that it is not necessary to install software for battery back ups because Win 7 already has support for this. If this is true then where where can the configuration be made for the back up? If this is not true then I've wasted your time in reading this and my time for asking a dumb question.

I use a APC UPS and I've never bothered installing the software, I just plug the USB cable in and the PC then treats it the same as on battery which can be configured in the PC power plan settings.

...I was thinking more along the lines of configuring the backup unit itself. <.< The ones I have at work are self contained systems where the computers don't know they exists but can still tell the computers to turn off. The configuration is stored on the UPS...in our case.

I've always installed the software for that kind of control. I only leave the PC on for 2 minutes while on battery and then I have it gracefully shut down.
