    HP System Repair Disc

    Hello,

Have a HP desktop PC that is acting flaky (a small percentage of the time it hangs), but keeps generating msgs about the HD Imminent Failure. Also has corrupted some files I had.

I did run ChkDsk, and it came back with the same message, after several hours of checking.

So, I have backed up everything I could, but would at least try to fix if at all possible.

Guess some of the sectors are now bad.

Have a single CD that came with PC (about 3 yrs old now) that is labeled "HP System Repair Disc", W7, 64 Bit.

Would like to at least try it.

When opened, it has the following:

    Files on the Disc:
    Boot
    Sources
    Boot Mgr.
    To Be Written To Disc:
    Desktop

So, now what ? There is not text or Help file.

Is there anything herein that might correct the bad Sectors, or any other HD
problem that is software and not hardware related ?
If so, how do I use it, please ?

Anything else worth trying at this stage ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

An HP System Repair Disc is similar to a Windows System Repair Disc.

It cannot be used to install your operating system, but it will allow you to boot into the Windows Recovery Environment.

Have a look here: Creating and Using a System Repair Disc (Windows 7) - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)

You need to backup any data you don't want to lose, as it sounds like you're going to need a new hard drive, sooner rather than later.

Bad sectors is not a software fault, its a hardware fault. Its an indication that your hard drive needs to be replaced. From my experience it is only going to get worse, you will just get more and more bad sectors. Your hard drive is now unreliable for data storage.

See if you can still make your HP Recovery Disks: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
HP Recov DIsks - make another set
Creating a Recovery Disk on a USB Flash Disk - HP technical support (Finland - English)

Or back up a Win7 system image to reimage to the new HD: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

Or order your Recovery Disks from HP Tech Support.

Or Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 - everything you need is in the blue link.
