File search facility in Windows 7

I'm pretty sure that when l clicked on start, and then typed in, eg:- *.tmp, it gave me a list of all files with .tmp extensions.
Now whatever l type in nothing is shown. I don't think l've changed anything so how do l search for files?

Try system restoring to before this started happening: System Restore

You can also try using this very good free search software. I use it all the time.
FileLocator Lite - Free File Searching Utility
Fast reliable and doesn't require indexing. It does content searching etc.

Sorry for the delay in replying folks, have been a bit preoccupied.
This happened a while ago now and l've only just got round to writing! So l don't have any valid restore points now Windude, but have downloaded FileLocator as MJF suggested.
Does the trick so thanks very much to you both.
