Recovered files have gibberish instead of what should be there

I had the misfortune, after backing up to my WD Passport my files prior to undertaking a Windows repair, to find that for no apparent reason the files had vanished from the drive.

Using a recovery utility the files are now ready for re-saving to my main hard disk. However a minority are now gibberish ( word, excel, pdf files mainly). I assume some thing has happened to encoding. Is there anything I can do to restore thsoe files to their proper states? In the case of some word/ excel files a error box as in the attachment showed, but none of the options I chose effected a cure.

    I'm in need of rescue!!!

What happened is those files, or parts of them, were over written by other data. Sorry but they are gone.

Once you have your data (what you can recover) copied back, it would be a good idea to format the WD Passport drive (full format, not quick) before using it again.

:)A sad thank you for the news.

Some of the items recovered have a "1SC" extension. I can find nothingreally informative about that extension.

    Ideas anyone?

The 1SC file type is primarily associated with 'Bio-Rad' by Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc.. Bio-Rad specializes in medical research.

Are you sure the extension isn't ISC, not 1SC.

ISC files are used for programming computer hardware devices, such as microprocessors. It contains configuration information for a Xilinx ISE project.

Sorry for delay in response.Been visiting.
Thanks all! :) Ext drive reformatted as suggested; now making sure that the many files with odd extensions have no use before erasure.
