Black Screen of Death, no bootup options available, not sure how to fi

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum section, wasn't sure where to put it. Anyhoo:

Having trouble with the black screen of death. Desktop is brand new, booted up just fine the first time, no issues. Restarted it to allow updates to be applied, then nothing.

After looking through tons of youtube videos and help threads I am stuck.

All I get is a black screen with a mouse cursor (that I can move, for all the good it does me)

I've tried every possible key combination out there, nothing works. F8, F12, Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing. Can't go into Safe Mode, can't access the BIOS. All I get is the Windows opening chime and a black screen where I would normally log in to access my computer. Every connection is secure, nothing loose.

Can anyone help?

EDIT: Using Windows 7 as the OS

Hello JBPBRC and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is the desktop store bought (Dell, Acer, HP, etc) or home built? If store bought you probably have a hidden recovery partition that would allow you to return the machine to factory specifications (just like the day you took it out of the box.) Since it's brand new and probably doesn't have a lot of "stuff" saved to the hard drive I think this might be the easiest way to proceed. Each manufacturer has its own way of accessing the recovery partition and that info is usually included in the owners manual or quick start guide.

If you aren't able to get into the recovery partition, please post back. There are other steps that can be tried. Also include your system specs. At the top of every Forum page is User CP. Click that and in the left colum click Edit System Spec.
