Dell Inspiron N5010 stuck up at starting window

    1) I ran the startup repair but could not finish.
    2) I ran diagnostic. Got a dst short test failure message and an error code:0f00:065D
    3) I got into safe mode and was able to run chkdsk C:.
    got the following:

    "54 percent complete, <250339 of 293212 index entries processed>
Error detected in index $130 for file 107986.
Error detected in index $130 for file 107986.

    293212 index entries processed.
    Index verification completed.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read only mode."

What do I need to do next? run chkdsk C:/r or something?

Hello window7Delluser and welcome to Seven Forums.

    It wouldn't hurt to run chkdsk C: /F /R

    Disk Check

If problems still exist you could run a separate System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. You could also try running the Startup Repair again. It also should be run at least 3 times if problems are found.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Startup Repair

    It's also possible that the hard drive has some physical problems. You may want to run a separate hard drive diagnostics check. A few of them include;

    Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

SeaTools | Seagate (click on downloads tab and select SeaTools for Windows option.)

Or you could go directly to the hard drive manufcturer's website and look for a diagnostic tool specifically for your drive.

Thank! I did try to run chkdsk /f/r but both times, the cmd says it can not lock the current drive and ask me to say yes to run chkdsk for next restart. And I did restart the computer but it stuck at starting window again. I had to restart and get to the safe mode. During the restart process, it did not seem like chkdsk and fix problem were carried out.

Considering the various issues your computer seems to have, and providing you're not dealing with a hardware problem like a failing hard drive, memory, motherboard, etc, the only other "diagnostic" I can recommend is a clean startup (AKA clean boot.)

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

If that doesn't narrow down the cause I'd go with a repair install.

I just could not perform repair install. I tried to start from DVD drive. When I clicked on update, it told me I must remove my installation disk so that windows started normally. But it was because my window could not start normally that I started to use installation in the first place. Gee...

Also, I was able to the launch the startup repair and get all the way to the end. It asked me to restart to finish the repair but then the computer stuck on 'starting windows' again upon restart. And when I ran it again, it would not finish again....

I also was able to rub sfc /scannow. It told me "window resources protection did not find any integrity violations"....

    Any other suggestions?

Run the HD maker's extended HD Diagnostic CD scan. Then see if Disk Check will finish as it must to confirm HD.

If HD checks out then work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot.

Here is what I did so far. I suspected the problem might be related to something wrong with the window updates process. I decided to download fixit to give it a shot. Before download, i went into DVD boot and started repair my computer from the installation window. And from there, I ran chkdsk c:/f/c, sfc /scannow and bootrec /FixBoot over the command prompt with no problems. Then, I restarted the computer but got into repair my computer with F8 and ran startup repair 3 times. After that, I logged into safe mode with network connections. I downloaded fixit but it would not fix the windows update component errors. Then I restarted and waited for nearly an hour till the 'Starting Windows' finally went through. I logged in, ran fix-it and restarted. It took another very long boot but I logged in and windows was able to update itself. And no more delays in process could be detected. I turned back msconfig to normal. It did not change much upon restarts, long but eventually, went through.

Now, everything else seems to be running as normal, except for the long restart. I have established another restore point , defragmented my drive and cleaned my disk. Everything I tried so far went as normal speed. The only thing still wrong is that if I restart, it hangs at " starting windows" for almost 20-30 minutes but it eventually passes it.

Any more suggestions for the 'starting windows' thing? It just seems like during the boot process, something goes into a very long loop or was not able to read the disk right.....

Did you work through the troubleshooting steps in the tutorial I linked? Be sure to establish a Clean Boot, check for newer Updates, read the logs for repeat errors, utilize System Resources to find solutions.

I did not run a HD scan, Greg. I think I ran them before using diagnostic tools coming with Win 7 earlier. Maybe I should do it again. I followed the trouble shooting steps up to the Wizard Partition CD and that was what made me come this far.

I did check the logs this morning briefly before I came to work. There were no obvious repeating errors from the log, except maybe one isStor but I don't know how to make any sense or use out of them. Those were all bytes that kind of stuff, right? How do you use them? and How do you show System resources used during reboot?

Thanks for everything. I think I am getting close. Things are back working again. lol...
