Windows 7: PC screen suddenly flashes to a black screen and back

19 Jun 2012   #11

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 32 bit

Hi is not fixed yet. I have run my AV and the Malwarebytes already, and nothing showed up. So don't think malware is the problem. And I keep my machine clean and don't play in chancy, unknown or unsecured playgrounds on the Internet.

Thank you for your time and help, it is much appreciated.

Hi Tink, et al,
For what it's worth, I doubt the problem is related to either of the events posted above. I was going to second windude99's idea to check for malware, but see you already have. (Of course, just because scan came up clean doesn't mean you're not infected...)

At this point a physical-connection issue seems reasonable:
- Bad video cable
- a connector not seated
- bad/broken solder on that brand-new MB.

I'd try gently wiggling video cable at both ends, or rock the Slimline tower/case slightly to see whether that provokes the problem.

Thanks, smopuiM. I will check the items that you mentioned and see what turns up. I have switched the PC connects to my duel monitor and so far no flashes. However, as they are random, it is hard to tell yet if that might have helped the problem. But, just one more thing to troubleshoot. Ya nev'a know. :)

Well appears that switching the connections to the dual monitor has resolved the problem with the flashing on and off. There has been no new incidences of the random flashing since I switched the connections. Both were secure, but, not sure why one works and the other didn't for the new PC. Same type of cables, same type of connection. But, at this point I am not going to question it, just be thankful it has stopped. The other PC does not have any flashing issue now either, so I guess I can say the problem has been resolved. At least for now.

Thank you all for your time and help, I truly do appreciate it. Maybe this will help someone else who runs into the same or similar problem with the newer HP Slimline desktops.

I have the same problem

My screen was working fine, nothing was changed on computer, I even tried on my other computer... it's the same thing...

Please don't bother talking me about virus or something else like this... I don't want you to waste your time or mine... The problem is material related and not like the other guy ones... I already tried to change my port. It's the same problem but not the same solution...

Thank you for helping me!! It will be greatly appreciated

win 7 professional 64bit

I know this thread is old but I think I have found a solution to this issue.

My monitor, an HP pavillion was new as was the rest of my desktop (built by me)and had the same problem as the others in this thread.

I went to "power options" from the start menu and chose the High performance option, at first I set it to never turn off the display and never sleep, but after a few days I set those to one hour each to see if any difference was made and the flashing/blinking problem didn't return.

Windows screen flashes, random grey screen & random black screen
This is driving me crazy. Right after I boot my laptop, the screen flashes randomly. Also something is stealing focus from what I am working on to something else. Then it likes to suddenly go to a grey screen. I have to manually reboot. If that is not enough, it like to just reboot.
