Your gaming experience will improve once you solve the immediate concerns. Some games however simply do crash at will on their own. Often that's a coding error no one can help you with except the game manufacturer releasing a patch for it.
Black screens and hard boots are common to a number of game mods for Steam driven titles! Once a mod if not regular game title locks up the screen goes black. This is where some game process tries to load into a system protected memory address and kaboom! you're done for! And it won't matter if details are set high or low in the game settings.
The first things however is being able to rule out any hardware fault as being the actual cause. This is why a good hard drive diagnostics program and a good run of memtest will tell if the drive or memory has a serious problem. The Check Disk apparently tried to fix a number of drive errors when you saw a good 2hr. run afterwards.
