Relocating Favorites folder

I regularly re-locate my user shell folders to point to my data drive - what I have found is that when moving the location you are asked if you want to move the contents of the original location.

if you say yes to this the folder is created correctly plus it looks and acts correctly as the desktop.ini file is the correct one for the latest install.

If the folder becomes corrupted for any reason, (displaying incorrect icon etc), I use the following procedure

• Choose reset to original location.
• Say yes to any create dialog but No to the move contents dialog. This results in windows recreating a working folder complete with correct Desktop.ini.

• Finally I move the folder back to the remote location saying yes to move the contents, this deletes the original folder and moves the desktop.ini correctly

It does seem a long winded method but in practice takes only a few moments and because the system creates the folders and files tends to make them more stable

The problem as indicated in its error message might have something to do with that I could never be able to delete those five subfolders either on Windows Explorer or on Internet Explorer. A message returned when I attempted to do that on Windows Explorer said the folder did not exist.

I'm happy to hear that you got it working again. :)

The complete set of actions is performed using the tools built into explorer, and works identically for any of the User Shell folders such as music or even links.

The reset to default is as highlighted

The second last option creates a shell folder under the C:\users\username tree without moving the contents of the existing folder

The last option moves the contents of the C:\users\username shell folder to the required location - adding them to the existing contents

With your particular issue with the favorites folder - the act of recreating the favorites folder may also recreate the default entries - but I cannot confirm this from actual experience.
If all else fails the creation of a new temporary user account should create the defaults for all the user shell folders and the contents of these folders may be copied into your own user folders using explorer - simply delete the temporary user (including files ) when you have everything you need

All the operations I perform are on the shell folder itself - not the folders pointed to by the link - therefore the location tab is always present.

Correct, all folders in the C:\Users\(user-name) folder, are considered shell folders.

I just had a similar problem with my Users favorite folder where it ended up in my documents folder probably by an accidental drag? Anyhow this ended up creating an additional Favorite folder in the default location probably to mimic the one that was dragged in documents by mistake!
NOTE: Deleting them wont help! So now there where three Favorite folders, what to do? After searching on the forum i came across this thread. I seen there was some confusion amongst some of the users posts so wanted to clear things up! Following Churin's method seems to have worked like a charm so far ? I navigated to the Fav folder that was in the wrong location (documents) Right cklicked>properties>Location> Restore Default button & then Dialog box with option to MOVE contents..in my case i selected YES to COPY & REPLACE excisting files,this way there was no duplicates of the files or another folder if u select DO NOTHING! After returning to explorer default locations things look normal with just the one folder that belongs there!
P.S. My situation deffinitly related to this post but i see it's a few yrs old. Please tell me if my post here is in the correct area,,as im still Green here.. Thanks Guys!
