    Disabled Snipping Tool

One of my club members "suddenly" found that the Snipping Tool was not working. I advised them tto go to services and make sure that The PC Tablet Components option was checked. It wasn't so they checked it and on rebooting the PC the Snipping Tool worked again. Fine no probelm but it left a doubt in my mind. What's the connection between the Snipping Tool and the PC Tablet Components? Is that not an odd place to put the ST software? Just an idle query really!

    That's a very queer observation mitchell65.

This is my Windows Features box:-

And when I type in 'Snipping Tool' into the Start menu, I get the following:-

So it appears I do not have the Tablet PC components checked but have the Snippin Tool anyway. Interesting.

Cracked it! My club mamber runs Vista not Win 7. Seems this anomaly was in Vista but was put right in Windows 7. Sorry forgot this member was on Vista. I wonder where the Snipping Tool software is located though?

Update: Have just discovered that the Snipping Tool originally came with a MS extension "Microsoft Experience pack for Tablet PC" which was introduced in 2007. So it's been around for over 5 years. That might explain the connection we see now! Or did with Vista.

    Code:
    %windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe

Thanks for that, makes sense of course. I will check with my members Vista setup just to ease my poor brain. Thanks for your import.

There are quite a few of mysterious connections between services. The Vista/snipping tool dependency was a well known dependency. But others are less known. E.g. if you disable the defrag service (for example if you only have an SSD), you cannot shrink a partition with Disk Management - go figure.

Because of those examples and others I always recommend not to play around with the services. If you disable a service, you never know what secondary effects you might be getting.

Yes I am in 100% agrement with the sentiment. Which makes it all the more odd as this particular lady (That's the Vista lady) member really doesn't ever touch anything on her PC unless she is certain what she is doing and she assured me she didn't know how to get tto the services so it is a bit of a mystery as to how the PC Tablet component got switched off in the first place. We may never know though I think she must have managed it somehow!

Mitch, if I remember right, I think the tablet service was off by default if you did not have a tablet. Years back I was fighting the same battle because the snipping tool did not show up in Accessories.
