Installed new hard drive on HP Pavillion dv6, boot disk not working

New to the Tech forum boards but I am having a problem with my HP Pavillion dv6t. The hard drive went bad so I installed a new Seagate 1TB internal hard drive in the notebook. Starts up fine and then it says that "No bootable device found"---insert disk press any key. The disc is in the cd rom, I went into the BIOS enabled the CD/ROM boot option. I also went into the Boot option menu and tried selecting the internal cd/dvd rom drive option and I went into the actual boot order screen and adjusted the boot order so it read the cd-rom drive first then the hard drive. I also am using the HP Application and Driver recovery DVD. I am not sure if the disc is bad or cd drive is bad. The other thought is that because it is a brand new hard drive there is no information on it for the drivers so maybe the computer is not processing the information. If anyone has knowledge of this issue or any ideas that can help I would greatly appreciate it.

You have no OS on the HD so what else would you expect? An Apps/Drivers disk will not reinstall the OS which is what you need.

Ok thank you and Gregrocker I was told by HP that the OS was part of the disk? But if that is the case is there a way to see if I have the 32 bit v. 64 bit. The sticker under the computer says what Windows I have but not 32 v 64

HP was likely referring to your Recovery Disks which would be on DVD, not CD. You can try booting those if you made them or ordered them but you will get all of the factory bloatware. I would Clean Reinstall to get only the OS for much better performance. Just follow the steps closely in tutorial and ask back any other questions.

It is actually a dv6t-3000 it has an i5 processor, originally a 640 GB HD and 4GB of RAM

With 4gb it's a toss up since hardware uses some of the RAM so likely all will be used even with a 3.5gb limit on 32 bit. With I5 I'd probably go 64 bit if it never hangs or bogs with a clean reinstall, as Win7 should never do with adequate hardware.

There are Two options available.



1. You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ). They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.

2. Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.



Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).

You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your PC ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. These Images are clean and from a well-respected source ( Digital River ).
