Search text file contents for special character

    Hey,

I'm trying to search the contents of some text files. The string I am searching for is SAP*. As you can probably guess when I type * I get everything that starts with the word SAP.

I tried using ~"SAP*", ~SAP"(*)" etc. but it continues to show me everything that starts with SAP. I can't use ~"*" because there are other entries that contain an *.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Hi,

The results depend on which text editor you are using. This is what I get when I use FREE NotePad++

    Hi,

Thanks, but this is not what I am after.

I am trying to search multiple .txt files using the Windows search feature. On XP you could just type SAP[*], but this doesn't work anymore.

EDIT: The text I want to search for is "SAP*", I don't want to return SAP1,SAP2 etc.. Only SAP*.

    Hi,

No - I want to search the contents of multiple text files for text that includes *.

The following results are not correct:

    SAP1
    SAPabc
    SAP23

    The following result is correct:

    SAP*

    Something like: Search - Content:~"SAP(*)"

    Hi,

But this will only search one text file, correct?

I have over 100 to search the contents of, this is why I am using the Windows Search feature.

No, it can open multiple text files.....for the number you want to search, I recommend UltraEdit (but its not free).

As far as I know, no Windows search function has the ability to scan within text files for specific strings, as in this case.

You might try using File Locator Lite (free).
You can search for SAP* in the file contents, and the * is not used as a wildcard character.
