When you click New Folder, just start typing the new name as the text New Folder should already be selected.

    Weird Indeed

Does anybody think sfc /scannow might be worth a try? Just a thought!

    I agree with mitchell65.

Sounds like Windows Explorer (or something else) may be broken.

The "New folder" button should give you the option to name the folder when you use it.

What happens when you left click in the main pane (right) in Windows Explorer and press "Ctrl + Shift + N"?

Control - Shift - N produces a new folder. But when I try to rename it, "test" in this case, I get the "item not found" window. When I press "try again," Windows accepts the name change. Same deal no matter which route I take to create a new folder.

    That's bizarre.

    • Just to confirm, it doesn't let you type in a name when it's created (i.e. you have to rename the folder from "New folder")?
    • I assume this happens in every location that you try to create a folder in?
    • Have you checked your PC for malware?
    • Have you tried "sfc /scannow"?

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Maybe your profile is corrupted.

    • Can you try it in another user account?
    • Can you start Windows in "Safe Mode"?
    • Does the problem still happen if you create a folder in "Safe Mode"?

Control + Shift + N produces the same problem.

I tried creating a new account and then creating a new desktop folder. Same problem.

I tried creating a new folder in Safe Mode. Same problem.

    SFC /scannow shows no problems.

I ran a full scan with Windows Defender Offline. No problems.

I also ran quick scans in Microsoft Security Essentials and in Malwarebytes Ant-Malware. No problems.

The problem occurs everywhere I try to create a new folder.

I wonder if this problem will go away with new Windows updates.

    Bizarre, indeed...

Ugh. A clean reinstall? Not now. Not in the cards for a while. It's an annoyance I'll have to live with for the time being. Thanks for the suggestions!

Did you try running SFC? Did you try a new account?

Sfc /scannow shows no problems. A new account shows the same problem. Same with trying this in other locations.
