Create and then rename a new folder

When I create a new folder in any directory and then try to rename it, I get the attached message. I usually cancel the message, and then the file is appropriately renamed. This message doesn't seem to do anything except get in the way. What gives with this? I don't recall getting this message before, at least not in XP. Thanks.

    Hello Arthur,

As a test, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the Folder and Directory options listed in the tutorial below may be able to help by resetting the default associations for folders.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Hope this may help, :)

Hi Shawn. Thanks for your response. I reset the Folder and Directory options as you suggested. No change. When I click "New Folder," I get a new folder called "New Folder." On the first try to rename it, it tells me the folder can't be found. I click "try again," and it works. Is that SOP?

No, that's not how it's suppose to work.

If this just started recently, then you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started to hopefully undo the cause and fix it.

If not, then as a test, create a new user account, and see if you have the same issue while logged in to it. If it works properly, then you could use the new account instead if you like.

    Yeah, I didn't think so.

When you right click and see "New Folder" and click on that, does it give you a chance to change the name before it is saved? That is the way mine works.

"New Folder" is a button option across the top of the window. Left-clicking that button once creates a new folder called "new folder." It does not give me a rename option when I right-click on the highlighted new folder, but it does give me that option when I right-click the new folder after it's unhighlighted. Then I get the message I originally attached. On "try again," it lets me rename the file. This behavior seems odd to me.

Does anybody think sfc /scannow might be worth a try? Just a thought!
