Windows 7: Windows 7 Expiration Question

Windows 7 Expiration Question

Hi All,

I'm a little curious lately about when my RC copy of Win7 will time out. From the looks of it (and I may be completely wrong here since I've not kept up with current news) the official release is going to be delayed, so will the RC still time out at some point before that? Or will it last at least until the official release date? Also, I had thought that the RC version of windows was only supposed to work with the Beta keys I recieved until Aug. 24th, after which time it was supposed to time out, yet this hasn't happened yet... Can anyone fill me in on when I'm going to have to start thinking about reinstalling Vista?

One other series of questions I've had come up recently is whether or not Win7 will be available free or at a discount for members of the Beta team. I know I've seen news items saying that it was going to be free for MSDN subscribers, but those subscriptions cost an arm and a leg and are just not feasible for a student (probably designed for organizations rather than individuals). I've also seen a couple of places here that offered it at a significantly reduced price, but you had to sign up for some membership to get access to the OS and the whole process seemed complicated and a little fishy (please tell me if it isn't though...). Are there really ways to get the program at such reduced rates, either for students (which both me and my wife are) or for Beta testers of the OS?

Thanks,
Greg

By RC i assume you mean 7100. that doesn't nec expire until 3/2010. You can check when yours expires by typing winver in search.

Current RTM version is 7600 and is going to be released on Oct 22,2009.

Prices are what you get. there is a student discount (may have been pulled today) you can get win 7 if you are a technet member (alot of ppl become technet member just for that reason)

Hope this helps

First .. the program to offer Windows 7 for $19.00 has pulled the RTM version from their catalog ..... more on that -=> here

I havent heard anything about the release date being delayed... its still set for Oct 22 as far as I know...

To find out how much time you have, open a command terminal and enter slmgr -dlv and it will show you....

EDIT: ZigZag cheats ... his cats post his replies for him...

For some reason I thought I had a Technet subscription since I had to access something similar as a student to get build 7100 in the first place. Are there student subscriptions to technet that don't cost $350 dollars? Or do students get access to it in some way. As I said before, I thought I had something like it, but when I logged in, it didn't show any kind of subscription.

Thanks,
Greg

If you had a TechNet subscription, you'd have the RTM version right now. If you look around online, you can usually find some discounts on TechNet from coupons or resellers. Considering what you get out of it, $350 is a bargain, though, especially considering the renewal costs, should you decide to, are $100 less.

This is a heads-up that ACM has had to take Windows 7 Final Release out of its Micorosoft Developer Academic Alliance package offered to Student Members due to a very large influx of non-computing students and professionals joining ACM just to download the software.
