    Downloaded files display in code

    Hi,

I have Windows 7, Office 2007, Adobe Reader 11. When I download a file, word doc, PDF, I get the window that asks me what language I want to read it in or what program I want open it. The program list does not include word or adobe. If I choose notpad or wordpad all I get is code. So I can't read any files my friends or coworkers send me to download and read.

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Try a scan with this tool:
    What is Windows Defender Offline?
Do a repair of Office and re-install the Adobe reader.

When you recieve the window asking you which program you want to open with, does it look like this?

Note: I selected a random file on my system, you will not recieve these program suggestions but the layout of the window should be the same.

If it does, note the 'Other Programs' underneath the icons for the main programs it has suggested by default. This will give you more suggestions based on the file type, or what you have used to open files in the past. If none of those are right, you can always click the 'Browse' button and navigate to the program yourself :)

Alternatively if none of the above applies then you can call up the window shown above by right-clicking on the file in question and selecting Open With.
If you have never used this feature before then it may pop up the window straight away, but (!):
If it has a little arrow to the side of the words, then hovering over that will bring up a submenu. On here, click Choose default program.

    Hope this helps.
